After winning the Southern Lakes Conference title last season, the Union Grove football team looked for another stellar campaign in 2022.

The Broncos, however, opened the 2022 season with three straight losses and looked to snap the harsh trend on Friday, Sept. 9 at Waterford.

But the Wolverines had other plans, with Waterford defeating Union Grove 41-22, behind a running game led by Carson Bilitz.

Bilitz, who scored four touchdowns, finished with 14 carries for 211 yards in Wolverines win against Union Grove.

While Waterford captured its first victory of the season and improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, the Broncos remained winless, falling to 0-4 and 0-2.

The Wolverines, coming off a 10-0 shutout loss to Badger, didn’t leave any doubts in their win against Union Grove.

Waterford mounted a 34-14 halftime lead, with Bilitz scoring on runs of 8, 35, and 50 yards in the first half.

Sutton Keller, meanwhile, bolstered the Wolverines’ run game with two touchdowns in the last two minutes of the second quarter.

Keller, like Bilitz, also produced a stellar ground game with 122 yards rushing on just 11 carries.

For Union Grove, Qquarterback Nathan Williams completed 22 of 34 pass attempts for 189 yards with two touchdowns and interception.

Gavin Young led the Broncos in receiving with four catches for 62 yards.

Waterford quarterback Max Northrop, who did not complete a pass in two attempts, contributed on the ground with 37 yards on eight carries.

Defensively, the Wolverines accounted for three sacks, including two from Austin Glynn.

Aidan Schaefer led Waterford with 14 total tackles.

For Union Grove, Noah Moris registered 12 total tackles.

The Broncos will look to bounce back, and achieve their first win, on Friday when they host Burlington (1-3, 1-1 SLC).

Waterford travels to Wilmot (3-1, 1-1 SLC).
