The Waterford Union High School boys and girls cross country teams each finished in the middle of the pack in strong fields Oct. 8 in the Wolverine Cross Country Invitational at Waterford Union High School.

The boys finished fourth in a nine-team field and the girls seventh in a 10-team field.

The Wolverines race Saturday in the Southern Lakes Conference Cross Country Meet at Fox River Park in Wilmot.

Ian Marino finished 18th in the boys race and turned in the fastest time of any Waterford competitor.

Marino finished the five-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 26.80 seconds.

“The boys continue to run tough against outstanding competition,” Waterford coach Nate Schreiber said. “Our top guys were aggressive from the start, but didn’t really work the tight pack that we’re capable of running.”

Luke Piccione finished 23rd (17:36), Josh Butscher 26th (17:51) and Andrew Larson 27th (17:52). Will Dubinsky finished 29th (17:55) and Eric Albrecht 30th (17:56).
Adam Schubring came in 38th (18:09) and Josh Werry 44th (18:43).

“Josh took it out hard, and that caught up to him in mile three, but I liked the determination he had from the gun,” Schreiber said. “Ian and Luke ran overall great races and continue to drop their times.
“Moving forward, it’s going to not only take those 3 to have big races – it’s the Nos. four and five guys running confidently with them. “

Lexi Neubauer finished 16th and paced the Waterford girls. Neubauer covered the five-kilometer course in 20:52.

“I thought our girls were a little tentative in their first mile,” Schreiber said. “With a talented field, that put us in a tough spot early in the race that we weren’t able to come back from.”

Gabby Bergeron finished 31st (21:48) and Haleigh Reindl 34th (21:57). Alyssa Rohner came in 45th (22:51) in front of a pack of Waterford runners.

Christina Krupinski finished 48th (23:03), Lauren Dziak 50th (23:33) and Laura Dezoma 51st (23:23). Hannah Engel finished 53rd (23:36).

“Our top four girls train together during the week, and the results didn’t quite show that,” Schreiber said. “Yet every race is an opportunity to learn a little about yourself, your training, and your teammates.”

In team standings, the Waterford boys scored 123 points. Germantown won the meet (39). Racine Horlick finished second (56) and Racine Case third (63).

Nicolet finished fifth (127), Racine Park sixth (166), West Allis Nathan Hale seventh (184) and Union Grove eighth (236). West Allis Central finished ninth (239).

Waterford scored 170 points in the girls’ race. Germantown also won the girls race (45). Kettle Moraine finished second (75), Nicolet third (100) and Waukesha South fourth (152). Union Grove finished fifth (154) and Waukesha North sixth (163).

West Allis Nathan Hale came in eighth (180), Racine Case ninth (190) and Racine Horlick 10th (212).
