Waterford Union High School High School’s Jakob Schappel scored two goals and helped the Greendale Ice Force beat the Whitefish Bay/Shorewood/Nicolet Storm 5-2 Dec. 11 in a non-conference game at Wilson Park in Milwaukee.

The Ice Force is a high school hockey team of boys from nine schools – Franklin, Greendale, Oak Creek, Greenfield, Union Grove, Waterford, St. Francis, New Berlin Eisenhower and New Berlin West. Wilson Park is the Ice Force’s home ice.

Greendale (5-1, 1-1 Classic Eight) plays Brookfield/Catholic Memorial (3-3, 0-2 Classic Eight) tonight at The Ponds of Brookfield. The Ice Force plays Milton (3-3) Saturday in a non-conference game at Wilson Park.

Schappel scored early against WNS. The senior forward scored an even strength goal 31 seconds into the first period off an assist from Bailey Beierle.

Schappel scored again with 6:49 elapsed in the first period on a power play, with assists coming from Kyle Mahoney and David Burton. Greendale led 3-1 after the first period.

“Our team came out of the gates very strong, focused, and determined,” Ice Force coach John Kennedy said. “We scored three times in the first six minutes and we were dominating.”

WNS scored in the second period on the power play to narrow the deficit to 3-2.

The Ice Force added another two goals in the third period, both from David Burton.

Waterford’s Owen Lemke played in relief after starter Konnor Ondriezek broke his skate and left the game. Lemke played 34 minutes in the second and third periods and stopped 29 of 30 shots.

Kennedy said the Ice Force needs to do a better job avoiding the penalty box and staying on the ice.

“We are getting too many undisciplined penalties,” Kennedy said. “We had seven penalties against WNS for 14 minutes, which is almost a third of the game.

“That means we are shorthanded and in survival mode to defend our goal, and that doesn’t allow hardly any chance for us to score.”
