Former Burlington pitcher named NCAA Player of the Week for UWM

Cody Peterson, a 2010 Burlington High School graduate, was named an NCAA Player of the Week last week.

Peterson pitches for Division 1 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and former Demons Mike Porcaro and Tell Taylor are his teammates.

On Friday afternoon against Valparaiso, Peterson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before settling for a one-hit shutout and a 3-0 victory.

The only hit was an infield single that was slowly rolled past Peterson.

No pitcher has tossed a no-hitter in school history.

Peterson threw 116 pitches, walking just one and striking out a season-high eight batters.

Only one runner reached second base on Peterson, in the second inning, but the lanky right-hander retired 17 batters in a row after that.

On the season, Peterson is 4-1 with a 4.36 ERA. He has allowed 43 hits in 43 1/3 innings and has struck out 31 batters and walked 13.

Tennis boys struggle at invite

On Saturday, the Burlington boys tennis team dropped to 1-7 with three 7-0 losses at the Muskego Quad.

“It wasn’t a good day for Burlington tennis,” said coach Ken Savaglia. “We played three good teams and came out on the losing end, big time.”

The Demons fell, 7-0, to Kenosha Indian Trail, New Berlin Eisenhower and Muskego.

Burlington players managed a third set in only one match, a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 loss at No. 2 singles against Eisenhower. Kyle Talley and Sam Skrundz competed for the Demons in that match.

Savaglia said he is still searching for the right lineup. Despite the lopsided defeats, he picked up positives from Saturday’s action.

“I saw progress throughout the day,” he said. “We got to put guys in a lot of different places. Spencer Spiewak really grew in singles play. We will keep experimenting to find the right lineup.”

Spiewak played at No. 3 singles. He also teamed with Talley at No. 2 doubles.
