The Burlington High School boys golf team achieved a first May 13 in the season’s fourth Southern Lakes Conference Major, held at Brighton Dale Golf Links in Kansasville.

The Demons won.

Waterford dominated the major format since its inception last season. The Wolverines, the defending SLC champions, won last season’s three majors and three of the four this season before Burlington prevailed at Brighton Dale.

“It is a nice momentum builder going into the conference tournament next Tuesday,” Demons coach Bill Berkholtz said.

The SLC boys golf tournament is May 22 at Rivermoor Golf Club in Waterford.

Burlington’s Brian Dankle won individual medalist honors at Brighton Dale with a 77. Berkholtz said Justin Meseberg sank a four-foot putt on the final hole to stay beneath 80 and finish third with a 79.

Ben Geiger shot an 81 and finished fifth. Alex Kruk finished at 90.

The Demons carded 327 as a team. Waterford finished second (337), Lake Geneva third (348) and Union Grove fourth (360). Wilmot placed fifth (361), Westosha Central sixth (372), Delavan-Darien seventh (380) and Elkhorn eighth (398).

The SLC Majors are contested in place of conference dual meets, and also provide competitors with more rounds of 18 holes.

Berkholtz said Burlington played much better at Brighton Dale than it did one day earlier, on May 12 at the Abbey Springs Invitational at Abbey Springs Golf Course in Fontana.

The Demons finished third (341). Lake Geneva won (336) and Edgerton finished second (337).

“We played well enough to finish third, but not up to the standards we can play,” Berkholtz said. “I was happy that Brian and Justin played well enough to get awards.”

Dankle and Meseberg each finished in the top 10.         Dankle shot an 83 and finished fifth and Meseberg shot an 84 and finished ninth. Geiger and Josh Ketterhagen each finished at 87.

Lake Geneva’s Jonathan Duggan won individual medalist honors with a 75.

Waterford beat the Demons by four strokes May 10 in the Browns Lake Ryder Cup Tournament. Burlington played host at Browns Lake Golf Course, which is its home course.

Waterford scored 226 and Burlington 230 in the 11-team tournament.

South Milwaukee finished third (245), Kenosha Bradford fourth (246), Wilmot fifth (246) and Westosha Central sixth (248).

Union Grove finished seventh (252), Racine Horlick eighth (260), Franklin ninth (264) and Delavan-Darien 10th. Oak Creek finished 11th (378).

The format mimicked that of the Ryder Cup. Competitors in two-man teams played holes one through six as a scramble, holes seven through 12 in best ball format and holes 13 through 18 in modified alternating shot format.

Dankle and Meseberg together carded a 72 and finished third. Geiger and Ketterhagen shot a 77 and finished eighth. Kruk and Danny Capozzi finished at 81, good for 12th place.

Waterford’s Zach Nash and Sam Heitl shot a 69 and won individual medalist honors.

In the season’s third SLC Major, held May 6 at Hawk’s View Golf Course in Lake Geneva, the Demons finished third (348).

Waterford won (326) and Lake Geneva finished second (344). Wilmot finished fourth (366), Delavan-Darien fifth (371) and Westosha Central sixth (380). Union Grove placed seventh (382) and Elkhorn eighth (414).

Meseberg finished second (79) to Nash (65) for individual medalist honors. Dankle finished 12th (87), Ketterhagen 19th (91) and Geiger 20th (91).
