The Burlington High Scholl boys golf team can claim the title of Racine County’s best.

The Demons won the Racine County Invitational May 1 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine.

“This is the first time in a long while that Burlington has won the tournament,” Demons coach Bill Berkholtz said. “I am proud of the consistency and concentration the guys demonstrated.”

The win at the Racine County Invitational is but one highlight in a recent strong stretch for the Demons.

Burlington finished second at the season’s second Southern Lakes Conference Major April 30 at Evergreen Golf Club in Elkhorn.

Burlington finished third in Division 2 May 3 at the Asehnfelter Invitational at Riverside Golf Course in Janesville and tied Walworth Big Foot May 5 in a non-conference dual meet at Big Foot Country Club.

Burlington won the Racine County Invitational by 12 strokes over second place Racine Case. The Demons finished with a team score of 320.

Case finished at 332. Waterford scored a 337, good for third.

Racine St. Catherine’s finished fourth (337), Racine Horlick fifth (346) and Racine Prairie sixth (347). Union Grove placed seventh (381), Racine Lutheran eighth (399) and Burlington Catholic Central ninth (421).

Consistency ruled the day for the Demons.

“It was truly a team effort, with all five guys grinding it out,” Berkholtz said. “A 79, two 80s, and an 81 are very good scores in the cool wind and rain.”

The Demons’ top four golfers each finished in the invitational’s top 10. Justin Meseberg led Burlington with a 79. Brian Dankle and Josh Ketterhagen each shot 80 and Ben Geiger finished at 81.

Case’s Ricky Kuiper won individual medalist honors in a three-hole playoff. Kuiper scored a 77.

Burlington shot a 329 in the SLC Major at Evergreen, 10 strokes behind first-place Waterford (319).

Lake Geneva finished third (336), Wilmot fourth (346), Union Grove fifth (358) and Delavan-Darien sixth (365). Westosha Central finished seventh (383) and Elkhorn eighth (398).

The SLC Majors are played in place of conference dual meets, and are intended to provide the players with more rounds of 18 holes. Dual meets are typically nine holes.

Dankle led Burlington with a 79 and finished fifth. Meseberg shot an 81 and finished seventh. Geiger came in at 82 and Ketterhagen shot an 87.

Waterford’s Zach Nash won individual medalist honors (74).

Burlington scored 332 at the Ashenfelter and finished behind Fort Atkinson (323) and Edgerton (315) in Division 2.

Milwaukee Marquette won the Division 1 tournament (319). Only four schools in the combined field of 31 finished with a better team score than Burlington. Beloit Memorial finished second in Division1 at 327.

Dankle finished second with a 75 to Fort Atkinson’s Nate Gilbert (74) for individual medalist honors in Division 2. Meseberg shot an 81, Geiger an 87 and Ketterhagen finished at 89.

The Demons played Big Foot without Dankle.

“Meseberg and Geiger picked up the slack, allowing us to tie Big Foot on their home course, 176-176,” Berkholtz said.

Meseberg led all golfers, shooting a 39. Geiger finished at 42. Alex Kruk shot a 46 and Ketterhagen a 49.

Jason Maki led Big Foot (42).

The Demons play Saturday in an invitational on their home course at Browns Lake Golf Course and Monday in an invitational hosted by Big Foot at Abbey Springs Golf Course in Fontana.

Demons third at Hawk’s View

Waterford continued its dominance in the conference season with another SLC Major Tuesday at Hawk’s View in Lake Geneva.

The Wolverines shot a 326 to run away from both Badger and Burlington.

The Demons notched a 348 to take third.
