Top-ranked Wausau West turns in dominant performance in quarterfinal round

The Burlington Demons got off to a slow start and never recovered Friday, winning just one match in a lopsided loss to top-ranked Wausau West in the WIAA Division 1 state team wrestling quarterfinals at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse in Madison.

The official final score was 54-0 after the Demons’ three teams points – captured by freshman Hegaman Tiedt at 182 pounds – were wiped out when a penalty was called on the Burlington bench in the final match.

Lake Geneva Badger, co-Southern Lakes Conference champion along with Burlington and Elkhorn, also suffered a lopsided loss, bowing to Kaukauna, 45-9, in the first round.

Logan Schmalfeldt vs. Ben Kostroski at 145 lbs. Kostroski by 7-1 decesion. West 3, Burlington 0.

At 152 freshman Isaiah Brenner is pinned in 29 seconds by Travis Hettenga. West 9-0.

At 160, Max Schenkenberg loses to Jared Mataczynski, 7-4. West 12-0.

At 170, Kyle Crayton loses to Cody Grunenwald, 6-9. West 15-0.

At 182, Hegeman Tiedt gets a takedown with 5 seconds left to win the Demons first and only match, 3-1, over senior David Lodahl. West 15-3.

At 195, Greg Miller loses by decision to Jake Whalen, 4-2. West 18-3.

At 220, Koty Agnes loses by decision to River Judd 9-6. West 21-3.

At 285, Tyler Kirkeeng loses by decision to Ryan Fay, 7-1. West, 24-3.

At 106, Joe Joerndt loses by technical fall to Bee Lor, 27-12. West, 29-3.

At 113, Robbie Elsbury is pinned by Alex Burk, 5:26.

At 120, Ben Hornickle loses by decision to Hunter Kuehl, 3-0. West, 38-3.

At 126, in matchup of state individual champs, freshman Josh Bird loses by fall to senior Colin Baine, 3:17. Bird moved up in class to face the unbeaten Baine.

At 132: Wes Gavin is pinned by Josh Noll, 4:40.

At 138, Brody Fitzpatrick loses by major major decision to Joe Umlauf, 9-1.

West moves on to face No. 4 Bay Port in the semifinals.
