With many athletes gone for spring break, the Burlington High School boys and girls track and field squads placed ninth and 16th, respectively, at the Racine Case Invitational held Saturday at the Frank Petretti Fieldhouse on the UW-Parkside campus.

The Demon boys tallied 27.25 points, while the girls squad had 12.5 points in the 18-team meet.

Most of the boys points came in field events, with Max Shenkenberg leading the way with 16 points on the basis of two second-place finishes.

Shenkenberg was second in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet six inches, and was second in the triple jump, leaping 42-09.5.

Skyler Vandusseldorp ws fourth in the high jump, clearing 5-08, while Tyuler Bopp tied for eight with a height of 5-04.

The other points for the boys came in the 800-meter run. Zach Wawrzyniakowski finished third in that event with a time of 2:04.73.

The best finishes for the girls squad came in the 800 and the shot put.

In the 800, freshman Meta Ehlen was fourth in a time of 2:30.03.

“She ran phenomenally,” head coach Dan Luneau said. “She had a great performance. That was probably the highlight of the meet for me.”

Kaysie Shebeneck placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 32-10.

Luneau called that result bittersweet, noting that Shebeneck did not feel she threw very well, yet she still finished fourth.

Shebeneck finished tied for eighth in the high jump, clearing 4-10.

The other points for the Demon girls came from Katie Sorensen’s seventh-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles. Sorensen ran the finals in 9.83 seconds, a couple of tenths faster than her qualifying time of 10.11.

The two squads have two weeks off before competing in the Milwaukee Lutheran Invitational Saturday, April 13.
