Standouts for the week of May 31, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

Calvin Kempken, Catholic Central High School track and field: Kempken has been solid in the shot put all season for the Hilltoppers, but he stepped up his game for the postseason last week.

After winning the CCHS regional last week with a best effort of 49 feet, 5 inches, Kempken threw a season-best 52 feet, six inches to win the sectional meet.

That earned Kempken the No. 2 seed in the Division 3 field at state this weekend.

Also considered: Brandon Miller, Waterford Union High School track and field; Mickael Pauly, Burlington High School track and field.

Female Athlete of the Week

Audra Weis, Burlington High School track and field: Weis, a returning WIAA Division 1 state medalist in the pole vault, has gone nowhere but up as a senior.

She continued her recent success at the WIAA Division 1 regional and sectional competitions last week.

She won the regional by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches, and then went a foot higher to win the sectional title three days later.

She is one of five athletes entered at state with the second-best height. Arrowhead’s Taylor Amann cleared 12 feet even at sectionals to earn the top seed.

Also considered: Megan Wadsworth, Catholic Central High School track and field; Maddie Szalewski, Waterford Union High School softball; Cassy Goodrich, Union Grove track and field.

Team of the Week

Burlington High School girls soccer: One of the goals at the start of the season for the Demon girls soccer team was to win a Southern Lakes Conference title.

After all, the program was the only in the school to never have won a conference crown.

The Demon girls took care of that odd distinction last week, winning the SLC tournament with a 1-0 victory over Lake Geneva Badger.

Maddy Harry scored the only goal of the contest, off an assist by Tegan Rock, with just eight minutes left in the game. BHS then held on the rest of the way for the victory.

Burlington reached the championship game with a 2-1 overtime win over Union Grove in the semifinals.

Union Grove led 1-0 at the half, and kept that lead until midway through the secondd half. Merin Mundt scored in the 64th minute for Burlington, with Alli Zeman getting the winning goal in the 84th minute of overtime off an assist from Mundt.

Trapshooting

The fourth season of the Southeastern Wisconsin High School Trapshooting Conference came to a close last week, with Burlington and Wilmot tied on top of the standings with 9-1 records.

The Demons beat Oconomowoc 121-106 to notch their ninth win of the season. Jordan Hintz and Alex Fenning both hit a perfect 25 targets.                 Wilmot, meanwhile, beat Racine Lutheran 117-107.

Union Grove beat Waterford 118-113. Ryan Maier, Patryck Sandoval and Olivia Pagels each hit 24 of 25 targets for the Broncos, while Philip Davis and Hunter Swan led Waterford with twin 24s.

The conference shoot will be Friday and Saturday at the Waukesha Gun Club. It will determine the conference team and individual champions in varsity, junior varsity and intermediate competition.
