Standouts for the Week of May 3, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

Max Shenkenberg, Burlington High School track and field: Shenkenberg, a state qualifier in the triple jump last year for BHS, hit his best jump of the year at the Badger Invite Friday.

Shenkenberg won the event with a best leap of 42 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

A senior, Shenkenberg qualified for state last year with a leap of 45 feet, 6 inches.

Also considered: Nolan Friend, Burlington High School baseball.

Female Athlete of the Week

Cassy Goodrich, Union Grove Union High School track and field: It’s fair to say the Union Grove junior has hit her mid-season stride.

Competing in three individual events at the Altheimer Invite in Pewaukee Saturday, Goodrich won all three.

Racing into a heavy headwind in the 100-meter dash, Goodrich won by almost six tenths in 13.27. In the 200, she won by 1.8 seconds in 26.54.

Goodrich also won the 400 in 58.38 – a new meet record and nearly four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Also considered: Maddie Szalewski, Waterford Union High School softball; Makenzie Kyle, Catholic Central High School softball.

Team of the Week

Burlington High School baseball: Because of early-season rainouts, the Burlington High School baseball team found itself playing six games in six days this past week.

That isn’t unusual among area teams, but how the Demons responded was. Bringing up a number of freshmen and other athletes from the junior varsity squad, Burlington went 5-1 over those six games, sweeping doubleheaders on April 25 and 26.

The Demons won all five Southern Lakes Conference games, sweeping Wilmot and Elkhorn, and then beating Waterford 4-3 Tuesday. The only loss was a 6-5 non-conference loss to Kenosha Indian Trails Academy.

BHS is now 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the SLC.

Trapshooting

With four weeks of the Southeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program conference slate remaining, Jefferson and Wilmot sit atop the varsity leaderboard with 6-0 records.

Jefferson put up the week’s top score, defeating Oconomowoc 121-109, while Wilmot beat Muskego 117-102.

Burlington, meanwhile, improved to 5-1 overall with a 120-108 win over Union Grove. Jordan Hintz, Cody Schilz, Josh Grisham, Zach Hahn and Myles Walkers all hit 24 of 25 targets. Jacob Griph led the Broncos with a score of 23.

Westosha Central carded a 113, led by Dalton Karrow’s perfect round, to beat Waterford’s 110. Phillip Davis and Matthew Paskiewicz each shot 23s to pace the Wolverines.

In the two tightest matches of the week, Badger beat Cudahy and Milwaukee Marquette downed Racine Lutheran, both by scores of 108-107.

Winners at the junior varsity level were Marquette, Badger, Wilmot, Jefferson, Union Grove, Westosha and Milwaukee Lutheran.

Final results from the Burlington Youth Invitational Shoot were unavailable due to a scoring problem.
