Standouts for the week of May 17, 2013

All 5’3 Standouts

Male Athlete of the Week

Conor Schultz, Burlington High School boys tennis: Schultz picked the right time to play his best tennis of the year.

Playing against No. 1 seed Nathaniel Brockmann of Waterford in the semifinals of the Southern Lakes Conference tournament Saturday, Schultz picked up a 6-2, 6-4 over Brockmann.

Schultz went on to shut down Union Grove’s David Leffler in the finals, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Schultz did not lose a set in the three matches he played at the tournament.

Also considered: Ben Miller, Union Grove Union High School baseball.

Female Athlete of the Week

Megan Jensen, Waterford Union High School softball: Jensen had the hitting night of her high school career May 6 in a doubleheader against Elkhorn.

In the first game, which Waterford won 15-2, Jensen was 2-for-2 with a triple and an in-the-park home run. The latter capped off a seven-run third inning for the Wolverines.

In game two, a 10-0 Waterford shutout, Jensen was 4-for-4 with a pair of triples.

Waterford is 12-3 overall, with two of those three losses to the No. 3 team in the state, Westosha Central.

Also considered: Merin Mundt, Burlington High School girls soccer.

Team of the Week

Burlington High School girls soccer: For the first time in the Southern Lakes Conference, the BHS girls soccer team is looking at something huge – the possibility of an SLC title.

The reason? The Demons remained undefeated in the conference last week with a 2-1 win over Elkhorn – considered by many to be a favorite in the SLC.

Both of Burlington’s goals were scored by freshman Merin Mundt, but the Demons got a complete-team effort in the victory. Opposing coach Eryca Card  credited BHS goalie Tanya Schilling with a tremendous effort in the game.

The Demons are now 6-0 in the Southern Lakes after beating Westosha 3-0 Tuesday night, are 10-3-1 overall and have scored 31 goals over those 15 games.

Trapshooting

The battle for the Southeast Wisconsin Trapshooting Conference title has begun.

With Jefferson – previously undefeated – falling 122-119 to Wilmot last week, and Burlington High School beating Milwaukee Marquette, BHS, Wilmot and Jefferson are all tied on top of the standings with 7-1 records.

Burlington holds the edge in total birds, with Jefferson and Wilmot close behind.

Wilmot had the top score of the week with the 122, and John Lass and Steven Helen each had perfect rounds for the Panthers.

For BHS, Jordan Hintz notched his fourth perfect score in eight weeks to lead BHS to a 117-115 win over Marquette.

Waterford edged Racine Lutheran 116-114, with Brad Gabrhel and Clayton Zortman each hitting 24 targets for the Wolverines. Union Grove beat Oconomowoc 114-106, with Paul Bisceglia leading the Broncos with a 24.

Lake Geneva Badger downed Westosha Central 118-117, Cudahy lost 115-105 in a virtual match, and Muskego lost in a virtual match as well.

Winners in junior varsity were Milwaukee Lutheran, Union Grove, Waterford, Wilmot, Central and Marquette.

The Burlington intermediates notched a score of 121 this past week, with perfect scores from Hunter Conrad and Weston Uhlenhake.
