Standouts for the week of May 10, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

Mickael Pauly, Burlington High School boys track: An exchange student from Belgium, made a mark in the fall running cross country for BHS.

Now he’s looking even stronger running track and field for the Demons. Pauly won his second 800-meter run in two weeks Friday, taking the event at the Demon Invite.

Pauly’s time of 1:57.98 was a season best, and was run in temperatures in the 40s and a steady light rain. The time ranks Pauly 11th in the state right now across all divisions, and sixth in Division 1.

Also considered: Nolan Friend, Burlington High School baseball; Yiannis Skapinikis, Waterford Union High School baseball.

Female Athlete of the Week

Merin Mundt, Burlington High School girls soccer: In spite of playing injured for the last two weeks, Mundt has been a scoring machine for the Demons.

Mundt scored one of BHS’s two goals in a 2-1 win over Racine St. Catherine’s April 30, and had an assist on the other. She also scored three goals in a 5-0 win over Wilmot May 2 that was called in the 55th minute due to a thunderstorm.

Mundt likely would have played an even bigger role over the weekend’s Racine County Invite, but was one of two big contributors – the other being goalkeeper Tanya Schilling – to get injured at the tournament.

Also considered: Riley Mayer, Union Grove Union High School girls soccer.

Team of the Week

Union Grove Union High School girls soccer: The Broncos girls are currently 8-4-1 – the first team in school history to be four games above .500.

But in addition to that, the Broncos finished fifth at the Racine County Invite at Waterford last weekend, and were a shootout from possibly winning the tournament.

The Broncos did not concede a goal in the tournament, and tied eventual champion Racine St. Catherine’s in the opening round, 0-0. However, Union Grove lost 3-1 in penalty kicks.

In the two consolation rounds, Union Grove beat Racine Park 2-0, and then Waterford 3-0. Riley Mayer had a goal and an assist in both games.

Union Grove was the only team in the tournament that did not concede a goal.

Trapshooting

The Burlington High School trap team picked off previously undefeated Wilmot last week in a key Southeastern Wisconsin SCTP conference match.

Jordan Hintz and Myles Walker both had perfect scores as BHS downed the Panthers 122-119.

Jefferson remained on top of the standings and undefeated with a 118-96 win over Cudahy.

Badger beat Union Grove, with the Broncos’ best score coming from Patryck Sandoval with a 24, while Phillip Davis notched his second perfect score of the year for Waterford in edging out Milwaukee Marquette 117-115.

Results from the Burlington Invitational Youth Shoot April 25-28 had BHS winning the team title. The Demons hit 470 of 500 targets, with the team of Alexa McCarthy (95), Walker (97), Cody Schilz (91), Hintz (97) and Christian Jensen (97). McCarthy won the high school girls division, while Burlington’s Courtney Uhlenhake won the intermediate girls title.

BHS graduate Josh Criscimagna, now attending the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, took the collegiate gold with a score of 97.

Waterford was runner-up the Class AA division, while Union Grove won the Class C championship.

More than 550 shooters took part in the event.
