Standouts for the week of June 14, 2013

Male Co-Athletes of the Week

Kross Krueger, Catholic Central High School baseball: While the CCHS baseball team might have been bounced from the WIAA Division 4 tournament last week in the sectional semifinals, Krueger made sure they were playing there in the first place.

Krueger pitched a complete-game two-hitter in a 6-1 win over third-ranked Barneveld in the sectional semifinals. He threw just 73 pitches in the effort, and the only run he allowed was a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Matt Heiligenthal, Catholic Central High School baseball: Heiligenthal made sure Krueger had the offense to back up his stellar pitching effort.

Heiligenthal went 3-for-3 at the plate in the 6-1 victory over Barneveld, including four RBI – driving in Krueger for the first run of the game. He also drove in Nolan Girard for a run in the third inning and had two other RBI.

Team of the Week

Waterford Union High School boys golf: After qualifying for the WIAA Division 1 state tournament May 28, the Wolverines may have been content to live the phrase “we’re just happy to be here” in Madison last week.

Instead, Waterford narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish at the meet, placing 12th with a two-day total of 653.

The Wolverines tied for the sixth-best score on day two, and only a few bad holes on day one kept them from the top 10. Waterford was just a stroke behind Beloit Memorial and Bay Port in 10th, and two behind Homestead in ninth. Cedarburg won the Division 1 title with a two-day total of 598.

Competing for Waterford at the state meet were Zach Nash, Garrett Buri, David Zahn, Grant Beck and Adam Dewane. All five golfers will return to Waterford next year.

Shooting

The Schultz Resort Rod and Gun Club will host five Wisconsin high school teams and three Wisconsin college team Friday in the first-ever Scholastic Pistol Program State Championship,

Consisting of four different pistol shooting stages, the team will compete against each other. Speed and accuracy both figure into the mix, and there will be three different age groups – junior, senior and collegiate.

The program has been organized by the Wisconsin SPP State Advisor, City of Burlington Police Officer Jeremy Krusemark. A first-year BHS team will compete at the championships.

Setting it straight

In the Catholic Central High School track and field story detailing results from the WIAA Division 3 meet last week, one name was inadvertently left out.

CCHS senior Calvin Kempken not only competed at the state meet, but was one of seven medalists for the Hilltoppers. Kempken finished fifth in the boys shot put, with his best throw measuring 50 feet, 9 inches.

We apologize for the omission.
