Standouts for the week of Jan. 18, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

Brody Fitzpatrick, Burlington High School wrestling: One of the highlights Saturday for the BHS wrestling team at the Freedom Invite was Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick pinned Frank Frasseto of Oshkosh West. That win was Fitzpatrick’s 100th of his high school career. He is now 102-20 overall (26-4 this season).

Fitzpatrick added an 8-0 win in the semifinals, and then scored a 12-3 major decision in the finals over Tyler Turriff of DePere, the No. 10-ranked wrestler at 138 in the state.

Fitzpatrick is ranked No. 8.

Also considered: Tanner Hunsucker, Waterford Union High School boys basketball; Kody Azarian, Waterford Union High School; Tony Beck, Union Grove Union High School.

Female Co-Athletes of the Week

Megan Jensen, Waterford Union High School girls basketball: In a game where scoring was at a premium, Jensen did a little bit of everything in a 40-36 win over Elkhorn at home last week.

Jensen scored 13 points – tying her for game-high honors with teammate Madison Blair – and also had six rebounds in the contest.

Ali Wiemer, Catholic Central High School girls basketball: Wiemer helped the Lady ’Toppers pick up their second win of the season – and second in a week – as CCHS downed St. Thomas More 59-49 Jan. 10.

Wiemer hit three 3-pointers in the contest, and was one of three CCHS players in double figures. The others were Kelsey Robers with 19 and Tori Kempken with 10.

Also considered: Madison Blair, Waterford Union High School girls basketball.

Team of the Week

Waterford Union High School girls basketball: While scoring has been difficult as of late for the Wolverines, the squad got just enough points for a 40-36 win over Elkhorn Jan. 11.

The Wolverines did that with three starters in foul trouble in the contest, and got contributions from the entire bench as a result. Megan Jensen and Madison Blair led the team with 13 points each, but Kaylee Fry came off the bench and filled in well at forward, while Shannon Malchine was solid in the guard spot.

In addition, Jensen had six rebounds and Blair had four assists and six rebounds. Jenna Bouffiou, Shannon Malchine, Shauna Malchine, Alyssa Helwig, Tiffany Stiewe, Fry and Kelly Strasser all scored two points each.

Quote of the Week

Give credit, but…

“Give a lot of credit to Racine Lutheran for their intense defense and creating most of those first half turnovers, but we did a terrible job handling the ball.”

– Catholic Central High School boys basketball coach after a loss to Racine Lutheran.
