Standouts for the week of Jan. 13, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

Chris Benavides, Waterford Union High School boys basketball: Benavides proved to be a critical part in the Wolverines’ 52-44 win over Elkhorn last week.

The senior scored a game-high 20 points – two ahead of Elkhorn standout Drew Bryson – in helping the Wolverines pull out the victory.

Benavides also hit a pair of 3-pointers in the contest, as the Wolverines remained two games back of Wilmot and are now just one behind Burlington in the Southern Lakes Conference race.

Also considered: Ben Hornickle, Burlington High School wrestling.

Female Athlete of the Week

Jenna Fitzpatrick, Burlington Combined gymnastics: One of three all-arounders to place in the top five at the Falcon Invite Saturday at Westosha Central High School, Fitzpatrick was the only one to put her name in the record books.

The junior tied the existing meet record on the uneven bars – set by Burlington’s Shana Popp in 2002 and tied by Jenna D’Alie of Racine Combined in 2004 – by scoring 9.80 to win the event.

Fitzpatrick finished fifth in the all-around – and then set a high-school career high in winning the all-around Tuesday night against Elkhorn with a score of 38.025.

Also considered: Bailey Fitzpatrick, Burlington Combined gymnastics; Molly Benavides, Burlington Combined gymnastics.

Team of the Week

Burlington High School wrestling: Coming off a fifth-place finish at the Mid-States Wrestling Tournament, the Burlington High School wrestling team knew it would have its hands full with its next dual meet opponent: Elkhorn, which had finished second at Mid-States.

In a battle from the opening match, the Demons won the last three matches of the dual match – two by pin and the last by forfeit – to edge out Elkhorn, 34-27.

Ben Hornickle (120) and Josh Bird (126) pinned their opponents to clinch the victory, and Jacob Burton got a forfeit at 132 to end the match.

Also winning matches for Burlington were Logan Schmalfeldt (138), Brody Fitzpatrick (145), Cody Elsbury, Tyler Kirkeeng (285) and Robert Elsbury (106).

Quote of the Week

Loving the butterflies.

“I get butterflies every time I land it. It’s the best feeling in the world when I land that floor routine.”

– Burlington Combined gymnast Molly Benavides on throwing a double back somersault in her floor routine.
