Standouts for the week of Feb. 8, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

David Jones, Burlington co-op swim team: Jones had a strong meet for the swim team at Saturday’s Southern Lakes Conference championship at Badger High School.

Jones had the best finish of any Demon, placing second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.53 seconds. That was .26 seconds faster than his previous personal best time.

Jones also took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.63. That time was 1.5 seconds lower than his previous personal best.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of sophomore Bryce Filer, seniors Austin Harris and Shaun Weber, and Jones, placed fourth with a season-best time of 1:38.47.

Also considered: Ben Hornickle, Burlington High School wrestling; Kody Azarian, Waterford Union High School wrestling; Tony Beck, Union Grove Union High School wrestling.

Female Co-Athletes of the Week

Sophie Foote, Catholic Central High School girls basketball: The Catholic Central High School junior had a career game Friday as the Lady ’Toppers downed Racine Lutheran 48-41 for their third win of the season.

Foote went on her own 8-0 run in the third quarter as Catholic Central rallied from a halftime deficit to take a 30-28 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Foote hit five free throws in the final three and a half minutes, and finished with a game-high 24 points.

Foote hit 12 of 18 free throws in the contest and hit six shots.

Also considered: Megan Jensen, Waterford Union High School girls basketball; Kelly Strasser, Waterford Union High School girls basketball.

 

Team of the Week

Waterford Union High School gymnastics: The Wolverines posted their season-high score Jan. 31 in defeating Elkhorn 122.975-122.30.

The team also had season-high team scores on the vault and floor exercise.

Individually, Sam Dziak had a season-high 9.10 score on the balance beam, and season highs of 9.0 on the floor exercise, 8.95 on the vault and 34.60 in the all-around.

Waterford coach Carrie Buelow noted that the team is finally at full strength and has added all of its difficulty into its routines.

Games of the Week

Burlington High School will host the WIAA Division 1 Regional Wrestling tournament Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.

Teams at the tournament are Franklin, Kenosha Bradford H.S., Kenosha Tremper, Racine Case, Racine Horlick, Racine Park and Union Grove.

Also on Saturday, the Burlington Combined gymnastics team travels to Mukwonago for the Nordy Invite starting at 9:30 a.m.

The Waterford Union High School gymnastics team will be at the Whitefish Bay Invite starting at 10 a.m.
