Standouts for the week of Feb. 22, 2013

Male Athlete of the Week

Kody Azarian, Waterford Union High School wrestling: Entering the weekend ranked in the top three in the state at 120 pounds, Azarian proved he will be a force to be reckoned with at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament by winning the Waukesha West sectional title Saturday.

Azarian opened with an 18-2 technical fall win over Alex Espada of Brookfield Central at 120 pounds. He followed that up with an 18-3 technical fall victory over Tere White of West Allis Central.

That put Azarian, 41-3 overall, into the first-place match against Trevor Kruzick of West Allis Nathan Hale. The senior had little trouble in racking up a 10-0 major decision.

It will be Azarian’s fourth straight trip to the state meet.

Also considered: Carson Biedrzycki, Burlington High School boys basketball.

Female Athlete of the Week

Molly Benavides, Burlington Combined gymnastics team: Benavides, en route to helping BBW set a team record on the floor exercise and win the Southern Lakes Conference title for the fourth straight year, had a great day herself Friday at the SLC meet.

Benavides won the floor exercise with a meet record 9.80, and scored a 38.300 in the all-around at the meet at Jefferson – another meet record.

Benavides also finished second on the vault (9.40), third on the uneven bars (9.55) and second on the balance beam (9.55).

BBW scored a 149.675 as a team, just short of the team record it set last year in winning the SLC meet at home (150.225).

Also considered: Bailey Fitzpatrick, Burlington Combined gymnastics; Megan Jensen, Waterford Union High School girls basketball.

Team of the Week

Burlington High School boys basketball: The Demons had already clinched a share of the SLC boys basketball crown going into Friday’s game against Wilmot, but were hoping to erase the sting of a 54-49 loss to the Panthers in January.

The Demons got out to an early lead, and then hung on for a 59-51 win over Wilmot at home.

Carson Biedrzycki was huge again for the Demons, finishing with a game-high 26 points. Reetz added 11 points, while Penzel pitched in 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

BHS is now 17-5 overall, and won the SLC with a 13-1 record.

Also considered: The Burlington High School wrestling team.
