Standouts for the Week of April 26, 2013

Female Athletes of the Week

Alyssa Helwig, Waterford Union High School softball: Helwig proved to be a big force in the Waterford bats Saturday as the Wolverines went 2-1 at the Monroe Invite.

Helwig hit a pair of home runs – one in the second and one in the fourth – as Waterford beat Freeport 15-2. Helwig was 4-for-4 at the plate in that game.

Against Barneveld in the next contest, she had a double.

Also considered: Maddie Szalewski, Waterford Union High School softball.

Cassy Goodrich, Union Grove Union High School girls track: A junior and two-time state qualifier, Goodrich served notice last week that she’s on track to make it three trips in a row to La Crosse.

Goodrich won two individual events and helped the 4×200 relay to a win Saturday at the Mike Lyon Invite in Whitewater.

She won the 100-meter dash in 12.62 seconds, and also the 200-meter dash in 26.72.

She teamed with her sister, Alex, Madelyn Schwartz and Jessica Marcinkus to win the 4×200 relay as well.

Also considered: Danielle Koenen, Burlington High School softball.

Team of the Week

Waterford Union High School softball: The Waterford Union High School softball team is off to a strong start in spite of weather woes of Southeast Wisconsin.

The Wolverines, after winning their season opener last week against Catholic Central High School on April 15, traveled to the Monroe Invite and came out with a 2-1 record. The Wolverines defeated Freeport (Ill.) and Barneveld, but lost to Kenosha Tremper 6-3.

On Monday, Waterford downed Burlington High School 9-0, in its first Southern Lakes Conference game of the season.

Trapshooting

More than 800 young athletes from six states are expected to travel to the Burlington Conservation club Thursday through Sunday for the annual Burlington Invitational Youth Shoot.

The athletes will compete in a 100-target, 16-yard American Trap event in five-person squads, with the highest total of broken targets being crowned champions. Last season, the BHS varsity team came away with the win, hitting 470 of a possible 500 targets.

There will also be a 25-target international-style wobble trap competition, which will use the top three scores from each team added to the top five trap scores to determine a High Overall champion team.

The event is being supported by the Midway Foundation’s Scholastic Shooting Trust, and all SCTP teams in attendance will earn funds for their school’s endowment fund.

Activities will begin at the conservation club Thursday at 2 p.m., Friday at noon, and Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. There will be door prizes, raffles, food and refreshments available throughout the event.

Meanwhile, the Southeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) High School Trapshooting conference has reached the midpoint of the 10-week season.

Jefferson and Wilmot sit atop the varsity leaderboard with 5-0 records.

Wilmot snuck past Waterford 112-111 to keep pace with Jefferson, Union Grove notched their first “W” of the year 107-96 over Muskego, and Burlington shot the top score of the week with Jordan Hintz, Josh Grisham and Ali Knight each smashing 25’s in route for a 122-111 victory over Cudahy.
