Standouts for the week of April 19, 2013

Male Athletes of the Week

David Zahn, Waterford Union High School golf: As Waterford hosted a weather-shortened Wolverine Classic at Rivermoor Golf Club last week, Zahn was the best of the best.

Zahn was one of two Waterford golfers to break 40 at the meet, shooting a 37 for medalist honors.

That score was just two over par.

Ben Miller, Union Grove Union High School baseball: On a cold, windy Saturday, the Union Grove baseball team might have been excused if the second game of a doubleheader against Luxemberg-Casco got away after the Broncos lost the first game.

Miller was a large part of the reason it didn’t, as he helped Union Grove to a 4-2 victory in the second game. Miller pitched five scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, and no walks, while striking out nine.

Team of the Week

Waterford boys golf: The Wolverines showed they will be a force to be reckoned with this year, opening their season last week with a team win at the rain-shortened Wolverine Classic.

David Zahn shot a 37 to lead the Wolverines, but Zach Nash was close behind with a 39.

Garrett Buri, Andrew Schultz and Grant Beck all shot 43s to round out the Waterford team score.
