Back when Tony Romo was an undrafted free agent and then backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, it was still a pretty big deal when he came back and hosted a football camp at his high school – Burlington.

Now, as a starting quarterback for the Cowboys, the camp enters its ninth year – and shows no signs of stopping.

“It’s incredibly impressive,” said BHS football coach Hans Block. “He chooses to come back and give back to his roots.

“It’s his way of reaching out to the kids in our community where he came from, and giving back to them,” Block said. “He also preaches the lessons of hard work and dedication.

“You can achieve a lot if you have those qualities.”

This year’s camp will be held Monday, June 24. Two all-position camps will be offered based on grade levels. Those entering third through sixth grade will attend a free afternoon camp from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Those entering grades 7-12 will have a non-padded skills development camp from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Both sessions have advanced registration and have limited space. As of last week, Block said 64 had registered for the morning camp, and about 200 for the free afternoon camp, which meant space was still available.

“There’s plenty of space available,” said Block, who added that day-of registration would be allowed, but advance registration was preferred in order to get t-shirt orders in.

Block said he was already looking forward to the event.

“It’s truly one of the highlights of the summer,” Block said. “You can’t help but smile when you’re around Tony.”
