A very successful season came to an end for the Burlington High School girls soccer team Saturday in a 2-0 loss to Janesville at home.

The loss came in the WIAA Division 1 regional final game and followed a 7-0 win over Racine Park Thursday in regional semifinal action.

The team, which ended the season with a 13-5-1 overall record, won its first Southern Lakes Conference title in BHS history this spring. That had been a team goal since the beginning of the season. The Demon girls were 8-1 in the SLC.

“We made some huge strides,” head coach Joel Molitor said. “I am looking forward to seeing how we will improve next year.”

In the loss to Janesville Craig, Molitor said his team struggled to contain Craig’s speed and physicality.

“Janesville Craig played an excellent game,” Molitor said.

Craig scored a goal in each half, while keeping the Demons off the board.

“I have no complaints about the way they played, nor do I think we could have played much better,” Molitor said. “We were unlucky not to score. We had the better of the chances.”

Vs. Racine Park

Two days earlier, the Demon girls had no trouble with Racine Park.

Junior Maddy Harry got Burlington on the board just five minutes into the game on an unassisted goal.

Nine minutes later, freshman Merin Mundt scored the first of her three goals off an assist from sophomore Madi Ibarra.

Junior Alli Zeman made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute, with sophomore Katie Travis getting an assist.

In the second half, Merin Mundt scored in the 46th minute and again three minutes later. Sophomore Jackie Vergara and Maddy Harry had assists, respectively.

In the 55th minute, Harry got her second goal of the game, with junior Ashley Derks assisting.

The final Demon goal came in the 68th minute, with Emily Mundt scoring it off an assist from Travis.

“This was an interesting game for us,” Molitor said. “We controlled the entire game, but really played our style in the second half.”

Molitor added that the team’s upperclassmen played especially well.

“Their leadership was great to see,” he said.
