After a solid first quarter that saw the Union Grove High School girls basketball team grab a 16-8 lead, the Bronco girls scored just 13 points the rest of the game in a 38-29 loss to Waterford Tuesday at home.
The Broncos scored just two points in each of the second and third quarters. During that same stretch, Waterford tallied 26 points, taking a 24-18 lead at the half and a 34-20 lead after three quarters.
Frankie Pettit led Union Grove with seven points.
The loss dropped the Bronco girls to 7-10 overall this season and 5-6 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Vs. Elkhorn
The Broncos avenged a two-point loss to Elkhorn 10 days earlier by pulling out a two-point win Feb. 1 at Elkhorn. The win pulled Union Grove even at 5-5 in the SLC going into Tuesday’s Waterford game.
The Bronco girls fell behind 10-2 early in this game but then made some defensive adjustments to pull even at 16 apiece after one quarter. Elkhorn did grab a 30-25 halftime lead, but a 19-9 third-quarter margin gave Union Grove a 44-39 lead going into the final eight minutes.
“When you make shots everything works good,” head coach Rob Domagalski said. “We applied some defensive pressure to give us some easier baskets.”
In the fourth quarter, Mecca Maier came up big in the last three Bronco possessions, making five of six free throws to hold off the Elks.
Overall, Union Grove was seven of 13 from the foul line, while Elkhorn was 10 of 16.
Three Bronco girls scored in double figures, with Maier leading the way with 12. Pettit added 11 and Sara Hartl 10. All of Hartl’s points came in the first half.
“She helped us get back in the game,” Domagalski said.
Vs. Westosha Central
Union Grove had its largest margin of victory in a 66-40 win at Westosha Central Jan. 29.
The Bronco girls won every quarter, leading 16-7 after one, 29-18 at the half and 48-28 after three periods.
Katie Wendorf led Union Grove with 14 points, with Sarah Petrovic adding 13 and Pettit 10.
Petrovic nearly had a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds.
“We sort of expect that from her,” Domagalski said, adding that they want Petrovic to improve even more in that area.
The Broncos had lots of fast-break opportunities in this SLC game.
“We’re starting to look better as a team – as a cohesive bunch,” Domagalski said.
Union Grove will travel to Somers for a non-conference game against Shoreland Lutheran on Monday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the girls will be at Burlington for an SLC matchup at 7 p.m.
On Friday, Feb. 15, the Broncos will host Lake Geneva Badger in a 6 p.m. SLC game.
