Live from state gymnastics Saturday!

11:15 a.m. – Burlington Combined gets off to a rocking start on the vault. Everyone landed both vaults, with Molly Benavides topping out with a 9.75. Jenna Fitzpatrick posted a 9.517 as her top score, and her sister Bailey was in at 9.45. Final counting score was Jacquie Fiorillo’s 9.1, lower than sectionals because she tucked both vault rather than piking them (which would have increased the score).

That’s a total of 37.817 – much better than last year’s start of 36.101.

11:45 a.m. – Franklin Combined posts five strong scores, four in the 9.3-9.4 range and one is a 9.633 from Sam Balcerak. Team total: 37.717. This is gearing up to be another epic showdown.

11:50 a.m. – Also in this rotation, Waterford was fairly solid on the balance beam. No scores, but we’ll attempt to get you updated at the next break.

12:15 p.m. – Burlington may have just handed Frankego the chance it needs. While Ciara Johnson and Jacquie Fiorillo started off strong, Molly Benavides had two big errors for the second night in a row. Bailey Fitzpatrick and Jenna Fitzpatrick finished with 9.55 and 9.567, respectively, but counting a 7.7-something by Benavides will hurt. Rough team score estimate here: 35.417.

12:45 p.m. – Franklin’s bars were rock solid again, as they have been all year. That might be the state title right there, depending on what happens on beam.

1:22 p.m. – It’s a little bit of Jekyll and Hyde for BBW on the beam. On one hand, Lauren Otter finally hit beam at the state meet, scoring 9.50. Jenna Fitzpatrick adds a 9.45 and Bailey Fitzpatrick a 9.35 (saved a fall), but Molly Benavides came off after a back handspring and scored 9.033. Still, a very nice beam total for the squad, 37.333.

2:55 p.m. – BBW just hit three great floor sets, one fall (Molly Benavides rolled out of her double tuck) and the team is going to like break 148. It’s not going to be good enough for the title, most likely. Franklin needs just around a 36.1 on floor to break the state record. Burlington’s had a really good day, but hasn’t been able to come up with the fourth score on any of the four events.

3:30 p.m. – It’s unofficial, but with Franklin in the 37.5-37.7 range floor – low counting score looks like a 9.25 and high came from Lauren Zurowski with a 9.637 – Frankego wins their third straight title, BBW is second for the third straight year, and it looks like Franklin will have a state record in the process.
