The Catholic Central High School softball team got its first win of the season April 25, downing Whitefish Bay Dominican 7-0.

The Lady Toppers got sophomore Makenzie Kyle back on the mound for the first time since turning an ankle against Waterford in the season opener. She went four innings without a hit or a walk, and struck out seven.

Freshman Makana Miles preserved the no-hiter with three strikeouts and no walks.

Catholic Central scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and never had to worry from there.

“Dominican is a much-improved team and will be competitive for the next several years,” said CCHS coach Bill Greskiw. “It was good to have Makenzie back and she looked strong.

“Makana continues to improve on the mound. The defense was much better than our last game as we made plays we should make,” he added. “All in all, it was good to get that first win.”

The top of the CCHS lineup provided all the offense. Leadoff hitter Kelsey Robers went 1-for-2 with a double and scored twice, while Hannah Uhen turned an infield single and two walks into three runs. Kyle scored twice on a hit and an error, and freshman Brianna Martin, running for Kyle, stole three bases.

On April 22, the Lady Toppers dropped a 10-7 decision to Kenosha St. Joseph, allowing five unearned runs in the top of the first.

Catholic Central scored two in the second, two in the third and three in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead, but couldn’t keep St. Joe’s from scoring three in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Tori Kempken had two hits with a double and two RBI for Catholic Central, while Maggie Smith also had a double and two RBI.

Miles made her second varsity start – the first was an 8-4 loss to Martin Luther on April 16 – and allowed just three earned runs.
