A new school record fell at the Greenfield WIAA Division 1 sectional Saturday.
Junior David Jones set the Burlington/Waterford co-op boys swimming record in the 100-yard breaststroke, turning in a time of one minute 6.01 seconds. That broke a 13-year-old record set by Jake Hanson in 2000.
That time gave him a fourth-place finish at sectional in that event.
Jones also finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, turning in a lifetime best of 23.02 seconds.
“He was seeded ninth and moved all the way up to third place, so that was a really good swim for him,” head coach Denita Jones said.
The time, though, was not good enough to qualify Jones for state.
Although the team could manage no better than 10th place out of 11 teams, seven of the 10 Burlington/Waterford co-op boys swimmers set either season or lifetime best times at the WIAA Division 1 boys swimming sectional Saturday at Greenfield.
Senior Shaun Weber had a lifetime best in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:58.77 seconds.
Weber also knocked nine seconds off his season low time in the 500-yard freestyle. He swam that lengthier event in 5:37.11.
“That was a very nice drop for sectional,” coach Jones said.
Freshman Conner Krattiger had a lifetime best in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:27.23.
“That was an awesome swim,” Jones said.
Freshman Luke Herman had a lifetime best in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.05.
Freshman Jacob Koehler had a lifetime best in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.05) and sophomore Bryce Filer a lifetime best in the 100-yard freestyle (55.56 seconds).
Sophomore Sam Weingart had a personal best in the 500-yard freestyle (6:20.05).
The Demons probably would have finished in ninth overall in the team standings except that the 200-yard freestyle relay team was disqualified. One of the swimmers left the starting block too early. The relay team would have finished sixth in that event.
