The Catholic Central High School baseball team couldn’t overcome six errors Tuesday night, and fell 12-10 to Racine Lutheran/Prairie Tuesday night in Racine.

“We need to take care of the ball,” said CCHS coach Tom O’Connell. “Too many times we throw the ball away or fail to cover the bases or bobble a simple throw and it’s costing us ball games.”

The Hilltoppers (3-7 overall, 2-6 in the Metro Classic Conference) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Kross Krueger had an RBI triple early, and then Nolan Girard’s bloop single to right scored Zach Mehring and Job Wagner.

But Lutheran/Prairie battled back and evened the score in the bottom of the third. Catholic Central responded with three of their own in the top of the fourth, but the wheels came off in the bottom of the fourth, as CCHS committed four errors, hit two batsman, issued two walks and saw Lutheran/Prairie add four hits for an 8-6 lead.

The ’Toppers went ahead in the top of the fifth with a three-run inning. Mehring picked up two RBI when a wild pitch brought in one run and his sac fly brought in another. Girard picked up his fifth RBI of the night with a base hit to right.

Lutheran/Prairie took the lead for good with a four-run fifth. Catholic Central got one run back in the sixth and had a chance for more, but stranded a pair of baserunners.

Krueger suffered the loss for Catholic Central. The two teams are scheduled to face each other against today at Beaumont Field at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Tegan Miles turned in a solid start for CCHS, striking out 11 in a 6-1 Catholic Central win over Milwaukee King.

Ben Heiligenthal led the Hilltopper offense with a 2-for-4 day that included a double and an RBI. Austin Hayes also had two hits for CCHS, while Alec Wegge, Aaron Sobbe and Girard all had RBIs in the game.
