The Catholic Central High School baseball team capped a busy week with a 6-0 shutout Tuesday against Shoreland Lutheran at Beaumont Field.

Playing their sixth game in seven days, the Hilltoppers got a boost from Kross Krueger – who went the distance in scattering six hits and working past four CCHS errors.

“All the rain at the start of the season has compressed our schedule so much,” said CCHS coach Tom O’Connell. “We have so many games to make up that you can’t avoid playing nearly every night.”

The Hilltoppers opened scoring in the bottom of the first when Zach Mehring reached on a single. Jake Kaider followed with a sharp single to center, and two outs later, Alec Wegge delivered an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

That would be all Catholic Central needed, but CCHS added another three runs in the second, and then scored twice in the fifth inning.

“This was a nice win,” O’Connell said. “We had a couple of our backups come in and do a nice job as well as playing new positions necessitated by injuries.

The two teams are scheduled to square off today at 4:30 p.m.

On Monday, the Hilltoppers fell 5-4 in a non-conference game at Milwaukee Riverside.

Injuries forced Catholic Central to shuffle its lineup, but the Hilltoppers still played solid. Started Aaron Sobbe was forced out after two innings due to injury, and Nick Seib responded with five innings of solid work.

Mehring led the Hilltoppers’ offense with a 3-for-4 night. Nolan Girard recorded a two-hit game that produced two RBI.

On Saturday, the Hilltoppers played Whitefish Bay Dominican, splitting the two games. Catholic Central won the first game 4-3 and lost the second 8-7.

Catholic Central also dropped a pair of games to Racine St. Catherine’s on April 24 and 25. The Hilltoppers lost the first game 10-7 and the second 21-0.

Catholic Central is now 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the Metro Classic Conference.
