The Catholic Central High School track and field team is going to be busy in La Crosse this weekend.

Of the 16 individuals and relays that qualified for last week’s sectional meet, 12 qualified for state out of the Division 3 sectional – held at Princeton High School May 23.

“They were focused and performed well,” said CCHS coach Keith Mulhollon. “We look forward to the State Meet in LaCrosse this coming weekend.”

CCHS had four different event winners. The top four finishers in each event qualified for state.

Leading the way was Catholic Central senior thrower Cal Kempken, who won the shot put with a best effort of 52 feet, six inches.

Kempken’s throw seeded him second at the state meet, and he will compete Saturday for the Division 3 medal podium.

Junior Megan Wadsworth, who went into sectional competition as the top-ranked 100-meter dash runner in girls Division 3, won her event in 12.94.

And freshman Hertel Novasic posted a season-best 2:02.57 in winning the boys 800-meter run.

In addition to the wins by individuals, CCHS also had a number of relays hit season bests – including the girls 4×200 of Monica Litman, Sophie Foote, Jacquie Fiorillo and Wadsworth, who won in 1:48.58. That time is the third-best seed time in the state.

CCHS also added a handful of other individual qualifiers, and several relays. Senior Carson Meinholz finished second in the 400 (50.26) and third in the 200 (22.94) to qualify in those two events – the Hilltoppers’ final individual qualifier.

But the Hilltoppers also saw the girls 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relays qualify, as well as the boys 4×100 and 4×400.

The girls 4×100 team of Foote, Litman, Shelby Frederick and Wadsworth was second in 51.68, while the boys 4×100 of Zach Frederick, Ethan Sobbe, Gavin Foote and Tyler Burzawa was fourth in 45.64.

Both 4×400 relays finished second. The girls team of Cassie and Ashley Reesman, Shelby Frederick and Kathleen Straube finished in 4:15.25, while the boys team of Novasic, Gavin Foote, Burzawa and Meinholz finished in 3:30.37.

In addition, the girls 4×800 relay of Cassie Reesman, Jennifer Smith, Kourtney Mulhollon and Kathleen Straube was third in 10:20.15.

Other sectional competitors who did not qualify for CCHS were Kyle Kresken in the discus (11th) and shot put (16th), Ethan Sobbe (12th) and Nick Ulloa (16th) in the 100, Gavin Clayton in the 1,600 (15th), Sam Joski in the 3,200 (ninth) and the boys 4×800 relay of Tyler Kurpiel, Clayton, Mitch Vos and Joski (fifth).
