After winning four of their last five games, Burlington High School head softball coach Gary Caliva knew his team would be facing a formidable opponent when taking on Westosha Central Tuesday.

Caliva found that out in the first game of the doubleheader when Westosha Central dominated the Demon girls in a 19-1 five-inning win.

The Falcons scored multiple runs in the first four innings. That included five in the first, four in the second, three in the third and seven in the fourth.

Burlington’s sole run came in the top of the fourth. Burlington had just two hits in the game.

Results of the second game of the doubleheader were unavailable at deadline.

Elkhorn doubleheader

After a doubleheader sweep of Elkhorn, the Demon girls crept close the .500 mark with a 7-8 overall record.

Burlington defeated the Elks 15-0 and 6-2 in SLC action.

In the first game, Danielle Koenen had a no-hitter going into the fifth, and ended with a one-hitter in the five-inning game. Of the 15 outs, 13 came by strikeout, while not walking a batter. She faced only 16 batters.

“She had a real nice game,” Caliva said.

Burlington jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, added four more runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth.

The Demons banged out 13 hits in this game, and also benefited from three walks and six errors.

Riley Hornickle was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Courtney Wieners was 2-for-2, scored twice, and batted in two.

In the second game, Elkhorn had eight hits, one walk and five runners on base due to errors, but could plate only two runs.

Once again, Burlington grabbed an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. When the Demon girls added three more runs in the third, they held a 5-0 lead.

Elkhorn scored single runs in both the fourth and the fifth off Burlington hurler Randee Jackson, but the Demons added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Racine County Invite

Burlington went 2-1 on Saturday at Tichigan Fields, losing the opener 3-0 to Racine Horlick, but coming back to defeat Racine Park 7-3 and Racine Lutheran 5-3.

“All-in-all, I’m real happy with the way they played,” Caliva said.

In the Horlick loss, the Demons managed just three hits, with one of those coming off a triple by Onstad.

“We didn’t hit the ball very well,” Caliva noted.

Horlick scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth off Koenen. Koenen gave up eight hits and three walks, while striking out six.

After not scoring against Horlick, Burlington wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against Park, scoring once in the first, and then added two runs in each of the second and third innings. That gave the Demon girls a 5-0 lead.

Park made it 5-1 in the fourth, but Burlington got that run back in the top of the fifth. Park made it 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Demons tacked on a run in the top of the sixth.

Talyn Lewis had two triples in this game, both leading off innings.

Jackson got the win, giving up six hits, walking one and striking out seven.

Lewis got the Demons off on the right track in the Racine Lutheran game with a solo homer in the bottom of the first.

The girls added three more runs in the third and another in the fourth and then held off a Racine Lutheran rally in the top of the seventh.

Lutheran scored three times in that inning, but had no one on base after the third run scored.
