Demon netters drop first two duals, but show improvement

With a tremendous amount of inexperience on the team, the Burlington High School boys tennis team was simply no match for Muskego Monday in a non-conference action played at Burlington. Muskego defeated the Demons 7-0.

“(Muskego is) just better than us,” head coach Ken Savaglia said. “We are still finding our way with a lot of inexperience.”

In singles action, Conor Schultz lost 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1, and Jon Martin fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.

“Conor and Jon fought a good fight against good opponents, but just could not stay with it,” Savaglia added.

Sam Skrundz lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Jorge Escobar 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.

In doubles action, Kyle Crayton and Zach Gesteland fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Dylan Kleitsch and Noah Ehlen lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2; and Dominic James and Kyle Talley fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

Kenosha Tremper invite

Burlington competed in the Kenosha Tremper invitational on Saturday, but results of that invitational were not available as of Tuesday evening.

Vs. Westosha Central

The Demon netters were at Southern Lakes Conference foe Westosha Central Tuesday and nearly pulled out a win, falling 4-3.

“We were in the match the whole way,” Savaglia said.

Savaglia indicated the match came down to the No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles matches. Both went three sets, but Burlington only got one win.

At No. 2 singles, Martin lost the opening set 6-4, but came back to win the second set 6-1. He could not keep the momentum going, though, and dropped the third set 6-1.

At No. 3 doubles, James and Talley lost the first set 7-5, but came back to win the next two sets by 6-4 scores.

Burlington’s other two wins came at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.

Schultz defeated Grant Jahnke, a player he lost to Saturday at Kenosha Tremper. This time he won easily, 6-1. 6-0.

Escobar won in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

“We got a ton of experience here, and I feel good about our team,” Savaglia said.

The Demons are now 0-2 overall this season, and 0-1 in the SLC.

On Thursday, April 18, Burlington will be at Union Grove for an SLC match at 4:15 p.m.

On Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, the netters will participate in the Waukesha South Invitational held at the Woyahn Tennis Complex.

Next week, on Tuesday, April 23, the boys will be at Elkhorn for an SLC match rescheduled due to weather from April 11.
