As the Burlington High School boys golf team approached regional competition Tuesday, head coach Bill Berkholtz knew that is his team played consistently it had a good chance of advancing to sectional.

The Demon boys did just that Tuesday, finishing third among nine teams at the Janesville Craig WIAA Division 1 regional played at Glen Erin Golf Club in Janesville.

Burlington carded a team score of 330. Beloit Memorial won this regional with a 320, with Milton second with a 324.

“I was very pleased with our showing today,” Berkholtz said.

Sophomore Brian Dankle tied for second, carding a 76. Beloit Memorial’s Kolton Kelley was the regional medalist with a 73. Dankle was tied with two others.

“Brian played very steady,” Berkholtz said.

Senior Tony Stang was tied with four others for 13th overall, shooting an 84.

Berkholtz noted he was impressed with Stang’s round as Stang withstood some difficult holes and persevered through it.

Junior Ben Geiger and senior Jay Essman were just one stroke back with 85s.

Senior Scott Vyhanek was Burlington’s fifth golfer and he fired a 92. His score did not count toward the team score.

The Demon golfers will participate in the Badger sectional to be held Tuesday, May 28, at Hawk’s View Golf Course, Lake Geneva. Tee time is 8:58 a.m.

The top two teams, plus the top three individual golfers not on qualifying teams, qualify for the Boys State Golf Championships to be played Monday, June 3, and Tuesday, June 4, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
