On a windy, sunny day on their “home track,” the Catholic Central High School track and field team showed it was serious about sending several team members to state.

A large number of CCHS athletes, competing in the WIAA Division 3 regional at Burlington High School, earned qualifying berths by finishing in the top four at Monday’s meet.

Head coach Keith Mulhollan was pleased with the effort.

“Overall a good regional meet for Catholic Central, and the first WIAA regional track and field meet we have hosted,” said Mulhollan. “Thanks to Burlington High School for being such a big help.

“Regionals is the first step toward the WIAA state meet in La Crosse, and I thought our athletes handled the first round of the tournament very well,” he added.

Catholic Central qualified all but one of its relays for today’s Princeton sectional, with the only non-qualifying relay being disqualified on a bad exchange.

In fact, all seven of those relays won.

The CCHS girls 4×100 relay of Sophie Foote, Monica Litman, Shelby Frederick and Megan Wadsworth won in 52.12, and Litman, Foote, Wadsworth and Jacquie Fiorillo won the 4×200 relay in 1:48.85.

Cassie and Ashley Reesman, Frederick and Kathleen Straube won the 4×400 relay in 4:16.25, and Cassie Reesman, Straube, Jennifer Smith and Kourtney Mulhollon won the 4×800 relay in 10:46.93.

For the boys, the 4×100 relay of Zach Frederick, Ethan Sobbe, Gavin Foote and Tyler Burzawa won in 46.24, while the 4×400 relay of Hertel Novasic, Foote, Burzawa and Carson Meinholz won in 3:30.60.

The 4×800 relay of Tyler Kurpiel, Gavin Clayton, Mitch Vos and Sam Joski also won in 9:04.58.

Meinholz, Joski, Novasic and Cal Kempken all won individual events as well for the boys. Meinholz won the 200 (22.99) and 400 (52.87), while Novasic won the 800 (2:04.81) and Kempken the shot put (49 feet, 5 inches).

Joski cruised to a victory in the 3,200 in 10:59.82.

Ethan Sobbe (second) and Nick Ulloa (fourth) both qualified in the 100, and Kyle Kresken qualified in both the shot put (fourth) and discus (third).

On the girls side, Wadsworth – ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 3 in the 100 – won that event in 13.07, running into a head wind. Sophie Foote also qualified in that event by finishing fourth.

Ashley Reesman was the final individual qualifier for the Lady ’Toppers, taking second in the 400 in (1:07.07).
