In their first outdoor action this spring, the Burlington High School track and field squads both placed fourth at the Southern Lakes Conference Relays held Monday at Elkhorn.

The Demon boys tallied 79 points, while the girls’ squad totaled 75.

Badger won the boys side of the competition with 93 points, while Waterford took the girls side with 107 points.

In the relay format, each team enters three athletes in each event, with the total times or distances added together for team placement. The exception to this is the normal relays, which include four runners from each team.

The Demon boys won two events and finished second in two other relays.

Zach Wawrzyniakowski, Noah Strohm, Joe Kusik and Mickael Pauly teamed up to win the 4-by-800 relay in eight minutes 53.09 seconds.

The Demons also won the boys pole vault relay. Max Shenkenberg tied for second clearing 10 feet even, while Cody Mather cleared 9-06 and Greg Vogt 9-00. That put three boys in the top six places.

The Demon boys also took second in the high jump relay (Ross Canales, Skylar VanDusseldorp and Tyler Bopp) and in the 1,600-meter run relay (Wawrzyniakowski, Pauly and Strohm).

The boys placed third in the 110-meter hurdles relay, the 300-meter hurdles relay and the shot put relay.

The 4-by-800 girls relay team also was victorious. Brittany Ehlen, Aleigha Barry, Meta Ehlen and Alyssa Wawryzniakowski turned in a winning time of 10:51.35.

“That’s good because we have two freshmen (Meta Ehlen and Wawryzniakowski) in there,” head coach Dan Luneau said. “They both have been running pretty well.”

The Demon girls also earned a win in the pole vault relay with Audra Weis the top vaulter at 9-00. Stephanie Sima and Brittany Ehlen each tied for third, clearing 7-00.

“It’s always good when all three of your pole vaulters clear a height,” Luneau said.

Burlington was one of only two teams to do that.

The girls’ squad had no second-place finishes.

The Demon girls had third-place finishes in the 1,600 sprint medley, the 1,600-meter run relay, and the discus throw relay.

Next up for the Demon squads is the Monroe Relays on Friday, April 19.

Burlington will compete in the Greendale Invitational on Monday, April 22.
