Coming off its first loss of the Southern Lakes Conference season Friday at Wilmot, the Burlington High School boys basketball team got no breaks Tuesday night.

Traveling to Waukesha West, the Demons couldn’t hold onto an early lead and fell 69-48 in the non-conference contest.

BHS is now 8-3 overall, while Waukesha West improved to 6-5.

“We didn’t play well,” BHS coach Steve Berezowitz said of the West game. “Not at all.”

The coach said the Demons could not come up with a solution to stop West’s Earnest Cowser, who finished with a game-high 29 points.

“We just didn’t do a very good job on him,” Berezowitz said. “We just had a lot of breakdowns tonight.”

Berezowitz said the Demons had a chance to get the lead down to three with a few minutes left in the game, but missed the opportunity.

Carson Biedrzycki led Burlington with 13 points, while Jimmy Penzel and Ty Dennis each added 10 and Ben Geiger nine.

Burlington was coming off a 53-49 loss at Wilmot Friday in a matchup of two unbeaten SLC teams.

“That was kind of the same thing,” Berezowitz said. “We had to fight our way back.”

The Demons had a poor third quarter, but managed to get back and lead by one late in the fourth quarter.

“Then we kind of hit the wall,” the coach explained. “We just couldn’t get over the hump.”

Biedrzycki led BHS against Wilmot with 18 points, while Dennis added 11 and Penzel 10. However, no one else had more than three.

Dennis had a team-high 12 rebounds and Penzel added 10, while Jake Reetz had eight assists. Jayden Essman pitched in seven rebounds and three assists.

The Demons host Delavan tonight, and then travel to Mukwonago to play the Indians Monday night.

“We’ve just got to get back to what we do well,” Berezowitz said. “We’re not off by a whole lot. We lost to a couple of good teams here.

“You can’t get too worked up. It’s January here.”
