The Union Grove softball team opened its season Friday at Kenosha Bradford and dropped a 2-0 non-conference game.

The Bronco girls collected just two hits in the game, one by Annie McClelland and the other by Claire Ryan.

“We clearly didn’t hit the ball well,” head coach Ryan Boylen said. “With eight players making their varsity debut and only really having two days outside, I’m really not worried about our sticks. I think this team will hit and will hit well.”

What bothered Boylen more were the four errors committed on defense.

“We have some cleaning up to do, but there is a solid base to work with,” Boylen said.

Two freshmen took the mound for Union Grove, with Allie Trudeau pitching 4-2/3 innings and giving up one run, and Alyssa McClelland pitching the final 1-1/3 inning and giving up the other Bradford run.

Bradford had five hits in the game, and also benefited from five Trudeau walks. Trudeau took the loss.

“Both threw very well in some pretty tough conditions against a good team,” Boylen said.

Bradford scored one run in each of the third and sixth innings.

The Bronco girls hosted Burlington in opening Southern Lakes Conference action Tuesday.

On Wednesday, they traveled to Franklin for a non-conference game that had been initially scheduled for March 19.

On Thursday, Union Grove was at Delavan-Darien for an SLC matchup.

Next week, the Broncos host Wilmot on Tuesday, April 16, and Badger on Thursday, April 18. Both are SLC games and are scheduled for 4:30 p.
