Burlington High School sophomore Josh Bird added another title to his resume Monday.

Bird won the 132-pound weight class at the USAW Cadet Greco Nationals at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota Monday.

Bird was dominant in his weight class, winning every match by technical fall except one – which was a bye before his final three matches.

In the quarterfinals, Bird beat Riley Beard of Illinois in a 13-5 tech fall, then downed Lucas Ortiz of Pennsylvania in a 7-0 tech fall.

In the finals, Bird won in a 15-7 tech fall over Logan Kass of Minnesota.

Greco-Roman wrestling takes place in 10 different age groups across the country, with the cadet class covering wrestlers between 16 and 17 or 15 with parent permission and a medical certificate.

Compared to freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman allows no holds below the waist. The tech fall designation indicates either a five-point throw, a six-point advantage or a wrestler winning two out of the three periods by technical superiority.

No wrestler got within seven points of Bird in the final totals.

Also wrestling at 132 pounds was Burlington junior Ben Hornickle, who finished eighth.

Hornickle won his first three matches before losing to Jacob Swift of Arizona in a technical fall.

Hornickle then won his first consolation match before losing to Kass, and then to Rodolfo Guillen of Georgia in a 1:50 fall.

Both Bird and Hornickle are members of the Burlington High School wrestling team, and also train at Higher Level Wrestling in Burlington.
