The Burlington High School softball team took it on the chin Monday at Waterford in a 9-0 loss to the Wolverines in Southern Lakes Conference action.

The loss dropped the Demon girls to 3-7 overall, and 2-1 in the SLC.

“They hit the ball hard and we made way too many mistakes,” head coach Gary Caliva said.

Waterford scored five times in the bottom of the first and never looked back, pounding out 12 hits, and benefiting from five Demon errors. Two of the runs in the first inning were unearned.

Waterford added another run in the second and three more in the fourth.

Burlington managed just four hits in the loss.

Danielle Koenen took the loss for the Demons, giving up nine runs (six earned) on the 12 hits. She walked one and struck out four.

“I thought she pitched pretty good,” Caliva said, noting that when the defense commits five errors that is five additional batters his pitcher has to face.

Tuesday’s game at home against Delavan-Darien was rescheduled to Wednesday as a doubleheader at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, the girls will participate in the Waterford Invitational to be played at Tichigan Fields. Caliva indicated the team should play three games.

Next week, the Demons will be at Elkhorn for a doubleheader on Monday starting at 4 p.m.

The girls will be at Westosha Central on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m., and will host Union Grove on Thursday, May 2, in another doubleheader at 4 p.m.

If everything goes as scheduled, the Demon girls would play nine games in six days starting Saturday.
