Athletes of the Week for Jan. 4, 2012

Male Co-Athletes of the Week

Josh Bird, Burlington High School wrestling: The BHS freshman got the attention of Wisconsin wrestling in a big way last week, winning the 120-pound title at the Mid-States wrestling tournament.

Bird, who just dropped from 126 to 120 pounds that week, won his first two matches by pin, then his quarterfinal by a 9-1 major decision.

In the semifinals, Bird defeated M.J. Pritchard of New Trier (Ill.) 2-0, and then cruised in the finals against Cole Large of Ozaukee for a 13-3 victory.

Bird is currently 16-1 on the season heading into Thursday night’s dual meet against Elkhorn.

Chris Benavides, Waterford Union High School boys basketball: Now a senior, Benavides helped the Wolverines go 1-1 at their home holiday tournament last week – in spite of the team missing players due to vacation or injury.

Benavides scored 22 points in Waterford’s 53-50 win over University School of Milwaukee Dec. 27 and then added 10 points in a 46-37 loss to Menomonee Falls.

Benavides had just one field goal against Falls, but hit all eight of his free-throw attempts in the game.

Romo Watch

Burlington High School graduate Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys played themselves right out of a playoff spot Sunday, falling 28-18 to the Washington Redskins.

The winner of the game clinched the NFC East and a playoff berth, while the loser went home.

That turned out to be the Cowboys, who saw Romo throw three interceptions – including one late in the game that the Redskins turned around for a touchdown and the two-score margin.

Romo completed just 20 of 37 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns in addition to the three picks.

Quote of the Week

Waiting for the other … ball to drop?

“It’s going to catch up where they’ll start dropping.”

– Union Grove girls basketball coach Rob Domagalski about his team’s effort to improve shooting.

Games of the Week

In what is shaping up to be a key mid-season game, the Burlington and Wilmot Union High School boys basketball teams meet Friday night at 7 p.m. at Wilmot.

Both teams have just one loss, and both teams enter the contest undefeated in the Southern Lakes Conference at 5-0.

The Waterford boys, meanwhile, are hoping to have a healthy squad on the floor Friday night for a game against Elkhorn. The two teams are back of BHS and Wilmot, each with two losses.

The Union Grove boys will host Shoreland Lutheran Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Westosha Central will play host to the Falcon Gymnastics Invite, starting at 10 a.m.

The meet traditionally draws some of the top teams in the state, with Burlington Combined and Franklin/Muskego/Whitnall/Oak Creek finishing 1-2 last year.

Also at the meet will be Illinois powerhouse New Trier, while Division 2 state qualifier Waterford and Division 1 state qualifier Arrowhead will also be at the meet.
