Paced by the efforts of sisters Serena, Sara and Olivia Wanasek, the Burlington co-op swim team posted a sixth-place finish at Saturday’s Shorewood Invite.

The invitational, which traditionally draws top competition early in the season, was won by Cedarburg with 384 points, while Bay Port close behind with 362 points.

Burlington scored 208 points.

Serena Wanasek, who finished fifth at state last year in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, finished fourth in both events Saturday.

She swam 1:58.15 in the 200 free and 5:11.03 in the 500. Her sister, Sara, finished sixth in the 200 free in 2:02.82 and eighth in the 500 free in 5:27.05.

Olivia Wanasek, meanwhile, was eighth in the 200 free in 2:05.21 and ninth in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.66.

“Well, they’re a significant part of the team,” said Burlington coach Denita Jones. “Serena and Sara, in addition to their swimming abilities, are captains and are helping lead this team.”

Those were the only top-10 individual finishes for the squad, but BHS added a pair of top-six relay finishes as well.

The 200 free relay of the three Wanaseks and Paytin Kennicott took third in 1:46.58, while the 400 free relay of the three Wanaseks and Kaley Brown were sixth in 3:51.61.

“That was actually good performances from both those girls,” said Jones. “Those relay spots, at this point, are wide open.

“That fourth spot, it’s a tight competition.”
