Standouts for the week of Sept. 7, 2012

Male Athlete of the Week
Irvin Jimenez, Burlington High School boys soccer: Jimenez scored the winning goal last week as the Demons picked up their first Southern Lakes Conference victory of the season, 2-1 over Wes-tosha Central.
Teammate Robert White-head played a through ball to Jimenez, who went on to score the second and winning goal for the Demons.
Also considered: Zach Gesteland, Burlington High School boys volleyball; Ryan Danbrea, Waterford Union High School football; Alex Thomaschek, Waterford Un-ion High School football; Grant Brooks, Waterford Union High School cross country.

Female Athlete of the Week
Sydney Ciano, Waterford Union High School girls ten-nis: A senior, Sydney Ciano was the deciding match on the court last week in a dual meet between Waterford and Union Grove.
With the Wolverines hav-ing already won at No. 4 singles and at No. 1 and 3 doubles, Ciano needed to win her match against Union Grove’s Lauren Tuma to clinch the dual meet.
Ciano downed Tuma 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 for the victory, which kept Waterford unde-feated in Southern Lakes Conference play.
Also considered: Kit Ko-cha, Burlington High School cross country; Morganne Longoria, Burlington High School girls volleyball; Me-gan Wadsworth, Catholic Central High School girls volleyball.

Team of the Week
The Burlington co-op swim team 500-yard crescen-do relay squad: The team of Ellie Petrie, Olivia Wanasek, Sara Wanasek and Serena Wanasek set a new confer-ence record in winning the event at the Southern Lakes Conference Relays last week at Lake Geneva Badger.
The team – which consist-ed of Petrie swimming a 50-yard free, Olivia Wanasek a 100, Sara Wanasek a 150 and Serena Wanasek a 200 – posted a time of 4:52.32, which was more than five seconds faster than the old record.
Also considered: Burling-ton High School girls volley-ball; Burlington High School boys volleyball.

Number of the Week
143 – The number of total games played by the Water-ford and Union Grove girls tennis teams in a dual meet last week, won by the Wol-verines 4-3. The dual meet featured three three-set matches (matches are best two out of three sets), and a number of sets that went to 6-4 or 7-5 – and only two sets that were won 6-0.

Games of the Week
In terms of football rival-ries in the area, not much rates higher than Burlington versus Waterford.
The two teams square off Friday night at 7 p.m. against Waterford. Both squads are 1-1, but the Wolverines won their Southern Lakes Confer-ence opener 28-13 over Wil-mot, while the Demons fell to conference favorite Badger 33-12.
Union Grove, meanwhile, will search for its first foot-ball victory of the season, hosting Delavan-Darien Fri-day night at 7 p.m. Union Grove is coming off a 34-20 loss to Westosha Central, while the Comets lost 30-13 at home against Elkhorn and are also 0-2.
Catholic Central, mean-while, will look to halt its 0-2 start to the season when it hosts Kenosha St. Joseph Saturday at 6 p.m. The Lan-cers are 2-0 and have aver-aged 47.5 points per game over the first two weeks of the season.
In other sports, Lutherdale Camp School near Elkhorn will play host to all SLC scores for the SLC Cross Country Relays Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
The BHS boys volleyball team will look to win its se-cond invite in a row Saturday when it travels to Racine for the Park Invite (9 a.m. start time).
