Male Athlete of the Week

Chad Redmer, Burlington High School football: Redmer picked up his third 100-plus game of the season Friday in helping BHS to a 55-21 win over Delavan-Darien.        Redmer rushed for 103 yards and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns – one in the first quarter and one in the third.

He also caught a pair of passes from quarterback Jayden Essman, including a 76-yard touchdown pass that put BHS ahead 21-0 with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.

Also considered: Grant Brooks, Waterford Union High School cross country; Mark Wallace, Burlington High School football.

Female Co-Athletes of the Week

Mari Suokko and Paige Murdoch, Union Grove Union High School girls golf: A freshman and a senior turned out to lead the Southern Lakes Conference golf tournament last week – and the Broncos.

Suokko and Murdoch tied on top of the individual standings at the tournament, though Murdoch claimed medalist honors on a tiebreaker.

Suokko, however, won Conference Player of the Year honors.

Also considered: Maggie Smith, Catholic Central High School volleyball; Valerie Knurr, Waterford Union High School cross country; Alyssa Helwig and Bridget Brockman, Waterford Union High School girls tennis.

Team of the Week

The Union Grove Union High School girls golf team: The Broncos made their case to be the most improved team in the Southern Lakes Conference, winning the SLC tournament going away last week.

Union Grove finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place Burlington, and had the top two finishes in the meet. Mari Suokko and Paige Murdoch tied for first with scores of 94, but Murdoch won the tiebreaker and medalist honors.

The Broncos also got scores of 106 from Tara Manteufel, and 115 from Jorey Staven to finish out the team score.

The fifth Bronco who competed was Emily Garbie with a 116.

Also considered: The Burlington High School boys volleyball team; Waterford Union High School cross country.

Romo Watch

While most of the focus the first three weeks of the National Football League season has been on the officiating with NFL replacement referees, the Dallas Cowboys – and Burlington High School graduate Tony Romo – have been putting together a 2-1 record.

Romo threw for 283 yards, no touchdowns and an interception Sunday in a 16-10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He completed 25 of 39 passes for an average of 7.3 yards per throw, but was sacked four times and had a quarterback rating of 43.4.

The Cowboys started the season with a win over the New York Giants, then fell to Seattle – the same team that the Green Bay Packers lost to Monday night.

Games of the Week

It’s the start of homecoming games this week, as both Waterford and Catholic Central host the yearly event.

CCHS will play host to Racine St. Catherine’s Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Topper Bowl in Burlington.

Waterford, meanwhile, gets a true rivalry game for its homecoming, playing host to Union Grove at 7 p.m.

Burlington, meanwhile, will head to Wilmot for a 7 p.m. contest.

If Waterford beats Union Grove, it will become playoff eligible in the WIAA. If Burlington and Catholic Central win, they will move within a game of being playoff eligible.
