Male Co-Athletes of the Week

Michael Dilley, Waterford Union High School football: The Waterford Union High School senior defensive play picked a great time for his first interception of the season.

Dilley picked off Burlington’s Jayden Essman and raced 75 yards for a touchdown – and what turned out to be the winning score in the Wolverines’ 21-13 win over BHS at home Friday night.

Zach Gesteland, Burlington High School boys volleyball: Gesteland did a little bit of everything for the Demons as they finished tied for third at the Racine Invite Saturday at Park High School – the team’s best-ever finish.

Gesteland, a senior setter who has been garnering attention both throughout the state and from a handful of NCAA programs, posted 93 assists, but also three block kills, 11 digs and 11 kills.

Also considered: Nolan Rueter, Burlington High School boys volleyball.

 

Female Athletes of the Week

Lydia Crabtree and Sierra Koenen, Burlington High School girls tennis: The No. 1 doubles team continued their unbeaten streak in the Southern Lakes Conference as the Demons won three SLC meets in the last week.

Crabtree and Koenen won 6-2, 6-4 in BHS’s 5-2 win over Westosha Central last week, and 6-1, 6-2 as BHS beat Elkhorn 5-2 on Monday.

Finally, the duo downed their Wilmot opponents 6-3, 6-2 Tuesday night.

The team is currently 14-7 overall.

Also considered: Maggie Smith, Catholic Central High School volleyball; Mari Suokko, Union Grove girls golf.

 

Team of the Week

The Burlington High School boys volleyball team: The Demons posted their best-ever finish at the Racine Invite Saturday, finishing tied for third after losing to eventual champion Appleton North in the semifinals.

North went on to beat defending state champion Milwaukee Marquette in the finals.

The Demons got offensive output from a number of players, including seniors Zach Gesteland, Carson Biedrzycki and Nick Bartlett, as well as junior Nolan Rueter.

The defense was paced by libero Garrett Schilling.

 

Number of the Week

2:49:56.34 – The total amount of time it took, in hours, minutes and seconds, for Westosha Central to win both the boys and girls titles at the Southern Lakes Conference relays Saturday at Lutherdale Camp School near Elkhorn.

The competition is split into two races (freshmen/sophomore and junior/senior) and the top overall five times for each team are added together. The team with the lowest combined time wins.

 

Games of the Week

Conference football action continues to take front and center this week, as several teams face off against familiar foes.

Catholic Central, still searching for its first win of the season, will travel to Racine’s Horlick Field to face Racine Lutheran Friday at 7 p.m.

Burlington, meanwhile, travels to Westosha Central for a 7 p.m. game against the Falcons, and Waterford – coming off a 21-13 win over the Demons – will host Elkhorn at the same time.

Union Grove, also searching for its first win, travels to Wilmot for a 7 p.m. contest.

Meanwhile, the Burlington co-op swim team, which features swimmers from Burlington, Catholic Central, East Troy, Waterford and Union Grove, hosts its first dual of the season Thursday night at 6 p.m.

The Burlington boys and girls volleyball teams have a rare weekend off.
