Standouts for the week of Oct. 12, 2012

Male Athlete of the Week

Grant Alderman, Catholic Central High School football: While Alderman has been limited this year due to injuries, he had his best game of the season Saturday against St. Thomas More.

In just 12 carries, Alderman rushed for 239 yards and four touchdowns in CCHS’s 46-0 rout of Thomas More.

Alderman had touchdown runs of 45, 15, 12 and 47 yards in the contest.

Also considered: Ross Canales, Burlington High School football; Carson Meinholz, Catholic Central High School football.

Female Athletes of the Week

Taylor Webb and Emily Rogahn, Waterford Union High School girls tennis: After spending all of the season at No. 3 doubles, Webb and Rogahn probably had no designs on this week’s WIAA state tournament in Madison.

But after a late-season injury saw the pair promoted to No. 2 doubles, the two not only got the job done by winning two matches at subsectionals, but also both matches at the WIAA Badger sectional to win the No. 2 doubles bracket and earn a berth to state.

Also considered: Maggie Smith, Catholic Central High School volleyball; Ciara Capezio, Burlington High School girls volleyball; Ali Zeman and Olivia Leuck, Burlington High School girls tennis; Alyssa Helwig and Bridget Brockmann, Waterford Union High School girls tennis.

Team of the Week

Union Grove Union High School girls tennis: Coming off a tie for the Southern Lakes Conference title, the Broncos were only just getting started.

Union Grove won last Monday’s WIAA Division 1 subsectional at Westosha Central with 18 points, and then saw No. 1 singles player Jessica DeGroot qualify for state at the sectional meet by placing fourth.

The Broncos had representatives in every bracket except No. 4 singles, including third-place finishes from Jenna Oliver at No. 3 singles and Kendall Reubner and Alyssa Leffler at No. 2 doubles.

Also considered: Burlington High School girls volleyball.

Romo Watch

It’s safe to say Dallas Cowboys quarterback and BHS graduate Tony Romo couldn’t have been happy with his performance on Monday Night Football last week

While Romo threw for 307 yards, he managed just one touchdown. He also threw five interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of just 14.2.

The Cowboys had their bye week this week.
