Saturday sports update: BBW wins sectional, Azarian top area wrestler at state

The Burlington/Badger/Wilmot gymnastics team did it again Friday night.

Competing against its primary competition for the WIAA Division 1 state title, the BBW squad broke its own unofficial state title, scoring 150.475 to win the Burlington sectional at Burlington High School.

The squad had at least two state individual qualifiers on every event – and swept the top three positions on vault and balance beam. The beam sweep was especially impressive since BBW was the first team up on the event at the sectional.

Bailey Fitzpatrick won the event with a 9.55, followed by Molly Benavides (9.375) and Kerry Leonard (9.25). On vault, Benavides posted the highest individual score in the state this year, winning the event with a 9.825. Fitzpatrick scored a 9.525 for second, while Leonard scored a 9.50 for third.

On the uneven bars, Jenna Fitzpatrick won the event with a 9.65, followed by her sister Bailey with a 9.55. Benavides missed qualifying on the event by one spot, taking sixth with a 9.20.

On the floor exercise, Benavides won with a 9.65, followed closely by Franklin/Muskego/Whitnall/Oak Creek’s Lauren Zurowski with a 9.625. Bailey Fitzpatrick scored a 9.50 for third.

BBW’s team victory was still in question going into the final rotation, as Frankego hit all four events. BBW headed to the uneven bars needing a 35.15, but hit its final four routines for scores over 9.0 to score 37.50 on the event.

Frankego finished second with a team score of 148.125.

WRESTLING

At state wrestling, Waterford junior Kody Azarian made his way through a pair of wrestlebacks to finish third at 120 pounds Saturday. BHS senior Derek Gill ended up sixth after entering the weekend looking for a state title.

BHS freshman Ben Hornickle was the only other area medalist, taking fourth at 106 pounds.
