The Catholic Central High School girls basketball team will get two more shots to put its first win on the board this week, playing a pair of games at the Badger Holiday Tournament.

The Lady ’Toppers open against host Badger Thursday, following the 6 p.m. game between Slinger and East Troy.

The consolation final will be Friday at 6 p.m., with the championship game to follow.

East Troy is undefeated and ranked second behind Neillsville in Division 3, with four players averaging in double figures.

Slinger is a solid 3-3, while Badger is 2-3 overall. The Badgers are paced by 5-9 senior Karina Reeves, who is averaging 11.6 points per game.

Catholic Central, meanwhile, will be looking to find some consistency in its scoring.

“We’ve played good defense overall and well in spurts offensively, but we need to do a better job of taking care of the ball and eliminate so many turnovers,” said CCHS coach Jeff Behrens. “Hopefully, eliminating the turnovers will get us a few shots and percentage-wise, more points.”

CCHS is averaging just 28.4 points per game this season, and Kelsey Robers leads the team with an average of 8.6 points per game. Ali Wiemer (7.8 ppg) follows, and Sophie Foote is averaging 8.3 but has played just three games due to injury.

Before heading into the tournament, the Lady ’Toppers dropped a 61-25 contest at home against Racine St. Catherine’s Dec. 20.

“St. Cat’s opened with a zone defense that offered us some good looks early on, but nothing was dropping for us,” Behrens said. “They switched to a man-to-man defense and things went from bad to worse for us.

“We just didn’t handle that at all.”

St. Cat’s took command early with a 14-3 first quarter advantage that grew to 30-5 at the half. Catholic Central scored 20 points in the second half, but St. Cat’s added another 31.

Hampered by three first-half fouls, Wiemer rallied back in the second half and recorded 12 points to lead the Lady ’Toppers. Robers was held to just five points by the stingy St. Cat’s defense.

Sabrina Stulo keyed the fast start for the Angels by hitting four of six 3-point attempts and finished with a game-high 16 points. Olivia Braun added 10 for the Angels.
