With juniors Kit Kocha and Aleigha Barry placing fourth and fifth in the junior race, the Burlington High School cross country teams kicked off their season Saturday at the Dog Days of August Run.

The 21-school event is run at Lincoln Park in Kenosha and does not include any team scores. Instead, there is a race for each grade level – freshmen through seniors.

Kocha turned in a time of 17 minutes flat, while Barry finished in 17:39. Those were the top two times for any Demon girl.

“They ran a real solid aggressive race,” head coach Rick Koceja said of Kocha and Barry.

The Demons also had two boys earn medals (the top 15 in each race were medal winners). Nathanial Sibley finished 12th in the sophomore race in a time of 19:37 (which was also the best time for any Demon boy), and Joe Kusik was 12th in the freshmen race in 21:31. Kusik’s time was sixth fastest among all Demon boys.

Besides Kocha and Barry, the top six times turned in by Demon girls included Carley Lahodik (19:23), Hannah Peterson (19:31), Molly Benavides (19:40) and Miranda Reed (21:44)

Lahodik is a senior, but it was her first race ever since she only went out for cross country this season. Peterson is also a senior, while Benavides is a sophomore and Reed a freshman.

Having the second fastest time for the Demon boys was senior Zach Wawrzyniakowski (20:11).

The third- through fifth-fastest times were turned in by sophomore Ben Lois (20:20), junior Noah Strohm (20:35) and junior Connor Schultz (20:40).

“It was very hot and humid, so the weather conditions weren’t ideal,” Koceja added.
