The Burlington High School girls volleyball team won its pool Friday evening at the Milwaukee Thomas More Joust, sweeping all three opponents.

However, the Demons were tested. After beating Kenosha Tremper 25-7, 25-15, and Thomas More 25-16, 25-20, West Bend East pushed BHS to the limit, 25-18, 29-27.

“We had to start figuring out how to earn things,” said co-head coach Leach. “I’m OK with being tested.”

Ciara Capezio led the Demons with 33 kills, while Quinn Spieker added 18 and Phoebe Hozeska 13. Kaysie Shebeneck had 63 assists, 15 digs and nine kills, while libero Morganne Longoria had 20 digs.

While the Demon girls were winning in Milwaukee, the first night of the prep football season kicked off. The Demons hosted Racine Horlick, and after jumping out to a 20-7 lead, had to sweat out the final few minutes and a late desperation drive by Horlick for a 20-13 victory.

Union Grove, meanwhile, got shut out at home by Racine Case, 35-0, and Waterford lost at home to Homestead 22-6. Catholic Central lost at home to Lake Country Lutheran 21-20.

The CCHS score is updated to reflect the final score, which was incorrect.
