Friday night football: Waterford stuns Badger

After being held scoreless for most of the game, the Waterford Union High School football team scored when it needed it most Friday night.

After a long run by Alex Thomaschek set the Wolverines up at the Badger 21-yard line, Waterford quarterback Ryan Danbrea scampered in from 21 yards out. The Wolverines then converted an onside kick, got a key first down and hung on for a 6-3 victory.

The win gave Waterford the Southern Lakes Conference title for the second consecutive year. The Wolverines tied Badger for the title last season – beating Badger in double overtime in the final game of the regular season, just like Friday.

Waterford had just 220 yards, 80 of which came on the final drive.

In other action Friday night, Burlington jumped out to a 28-12 halftime lead and hung on to down Union Grove, 49-20. Receiver Ty Dennis had three touchdown passes from Jayden Essman on the evening.

Union Grove was within 28-20 before the Demons scored the final 21 points of the game.

In the final local game of the night, Catholic Central beat Martin Luther 54-27. Grant Alderman had 285 yards rushing and four touchdowns for the Hilltoppers.
