Burlington High School’s Ciara Capezio goes up for one of her 37 kills in the WIAA Division 1 state semifinal win over Menomonee Falls. Capezio’s kill number tied the D1 record for most kills in a four-set match.

8:40 p.m. – Still waiting on the final stats, but here are a few comments from BHS co-head coach Dan Lynch and BHS senior Kaysie Shebeneck:

Lynch: “We jumped on them games one, three and four. We got big leads to start the match. It was a battle. The scores didn’t always show it, but it was a battle.”

“I think it was every game. That’s when we were scoring.” – Lynch on the serving of sophomore Sarra Webb, who had long runs on her serve to help the Demons.

Shebeneck: “I think that it was awesome. Every ball that we touched, we just made better.”

Final stats: Capezio finished with 37 kills on 66 attempts. The number of kills ties the D1 state record for a four-set match. Lee finished with 18 kills for Falls, but no one else was in double figures for kills on either team.

According to the stats, Morganne Longoria led BHS with 15 digs, but I’m guessing that number is a little low, since Falls had 110 kill attempts on the night.

8:20 p.m. – Folks, your Division 1 state final is set, as BHS wins game four 25-17. Back with comments and a few photos in a bit.

8:15 p.m. – BHS making a run on Sarra Webb’s serve, 19-15 lead.

8:12 p.m. – We’re tied at 14-all, and BHS uses a timeout as Falls has climbed all the way back into this set.

8:05 p.m. – BHS has been aggressive all night, and now they are out to a 9-3 lead in set four.

7:59 p.m. – I’m doing my best to give this justice, folks, but also, if you have the ability, check out the live broadcast via www.wiaawi.org. These kids deserve your attention; it’s been wonderful, wonderful volleyball.

BHS takes set three, 25-16.

7:45 p.m. – BHS up 7-2 in set three, but there is a tremendous effort on both sides of the ball.

7:38 p.m. – Falls takes set two, 25-17, on a Capezio hitting error, just her second or third of the match.

7:35 p.m. – The Indians have manufacturing a nice little run here, getting up the block finally and Capezio in the back row. 21-14, Falls.

7:31 p.m. – Falls switched up its rotation, it appears, for set two, and it’s take Burlington slightly out of the rhythm it had in the first set. It’s BHS timeout with Falls up 16-13.

7:18 p.m. – BHS wins set one in a route, 25-13. Capezio is hitting like there is no tomorrow, and she’s made just one hitting error. Menomonee Falls cannot get a block up on her at this point.

7:14 p.m. – 20-10 BHS, more in a bit.

7:04 p.m. – No slow start for Burlington tonight. BHS is clicking on all cylinders, with a block kill by Kaysie Shebeneck giving BHS a 7-1 lead and forcing a Menomonee Falls timeout.

6:58 p.m. – Getting through introductions now. Hold tight, all, we’re about to start. This should be a wild evening, with Menomonee Falls featuring Simone Lee and BHS featuring Ciara Capezio – two of the hardest hitters in the state.

6:48 p.m. – Now the student section is doing group stretches. I think they have a little too much energy after a three-hour bus trip. Just saying.

6:45 p.m. – The Burlington student section just sang “Happy Birthday” to senior Ciara Capezio, who turned 18 today. It is assistant coach Mike Jones’ birthday as well.

6:15 p.m. – Good evening, folks. We are live and online at the WIAA state girls volleyball tournament. We will be live tonight with the Division 1 semifinals, where Burlington plays Menomonee Falls. The other semifinal is Merrill – which upset Muskego – against Divine Savior Holy Angels.

We will be posting as of 6:45 p.m., so please refresh often.
