Although the Burlington High School boys soccer team had just lost 4-0 to Elkhorn Tuesday, you would never have known it by talking to head coach Phil Molitor.

Molitor noted the team has been learning a new offense and Tuesday’s game, he believes, was a turning point.

“I think the boys may have turned a corner tonight,” Molitor said. “They are figuring it out.”

Molitor added that Mark Caringello, Robert Whitehead and Eric Aguirre played very well in the middle center of the field.

“They dominated,” Molitor said. “They played so well. We controlled the middle of the field beautifully. Now we just need to figure out how to score.”

Elkhorn scored twice in the first half, once at the 31st minute and then again in the 37th minute.

They got their third goal two minutes into the second half and their fourth 11 minutes into the half.

With the loss, the Demons fall to 2-2 in the SLC and 4-8 overall.

Milton Invitational

The Demon boys ended this two-day event on Friday and Saturday with a 2-0 win over Union Grove. Prior to that, Burlington had dropped a 2-0 decision to Milton on Friday, and a 3-0 match to Waukesha North on Saturday.

In the 2-0 loss to Milton, Molitor said the team “gave up a couple of not very good goals.”

One goal came about when a Burlington defender miffed on a ball and put it into his own net.

“In general, we were really close,” Molitor said.

In the loss to Waukesha North, “a couple of mistakes led to goals,” Molitor said.

In addition, the Demons had several chances to score, but just could not finish.

Molitor was very happy with the win over Union Grove.

“Certainly the bet game all weekend, and maybe the best game all year,” he said. “We played really, really well.”

Molitor said Burlington could have scored several more goals has he said the boys dominated play and had numerous chances to score.

Wilmot

In this SLC matchup, the Demons jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then held on for the win.

Colin Schuerman, off an assist from goalkeeper Nolan Friend, scored in the 22nd minute to make it 1-0.

“(Friend) made a long kick and Schuerman took the ball out of the air, moved past a defender, and put the ball into the goal,” Molitor said, adding that Friend “was a very happy man.”

It is not often that a goalkeeper gets an assist on a goal.

In the 32nd minute, Mark Caringello, off an assist from Schuerman, made it 2-0 Burlington.

Molitor noted the goal was a combination of the team putting five or six passes together.

“We worked the ball with five or six different players,” he said. “It was a really nice goal.”
